Propellerheads might be waking up finally. Not that it means anything yet.

For instance slow sdk development has hurt RE significantly, but clearly that isn’t killing them.
That's why they added VST support to finish it off. :D

Nah REs are still cool.

I get the impression they may made a miscalculation and maybe they're just backing themselves out.

Who knows, maybe next SDK we get 3d graphic displays, or laser lights or something ;)

This is one of the areas mentioned specifically in the original Verdane news release. Verdane are supposed to support :

"...the company's expansion in several areas around the core product Reason, the app store-model Rack Extensions and the mobile music-making platform."

So I expect them to address REs later, if indeed they do decide to keep them going.

EDIT: Something I found interesting - the last RE I purchased was Fingerpicking Nylon on 11/21/17 for $9 and the most recent one before that was on 3/16/17.

VST support really killed REs for me, so I'm really curious to see what they're going to do with REs.

Look at NI Razor. Already has 3D. 3 Years ago.

There’s speculation and then there’s making educated assumptions based on past history. Here’s the past history: everyone thinks Props are “in trouble”. Here’s what happens: NOTHING. We keep getting new versions of Reason, RE’s, and things move along.

Nothing to see here, folks. Relax. ;)

VSTs are effectively native applications. VSTs have always been able to do 3D. It's not VST providing the 3D, it's the Windows and OSX Operating System providing the functionality via your graphics card.

For REs to be platform independent they can't give plugins direct access to the Operating System, and have to provide a platform independent way to do things. You can actually get 3d vector graphics in REs, by the way.

Until they get bought. By Apple. Then what?

Someone's going to acquire them. That should be your biggest fear.

Just a matter of time....

Why? Apple acquiring Logic turned out to be a good thing for Logic users.

They’re not killed off. Just the prospect of major VST ports is killed. Plenty of original devices are still being made.

LOL Apple acquiring Logic is the reason I stopped using Logic. Forever. As a Windows user I'd argue the acquisition was dreadful. But hey, soon after I dropped Logic I bought Reason.

I had in mind all the Windows-only Reason users. They would lose Reason like they lost Logic and Alchemy.

I would personally LOVE it if Apple purchased Propellerhead. I've already sent my friend on the Logic team a note.

And all Windows users too, once Microsoft integrate Allihoopa with Office Cloud and Skype so that every time you log into Windows you can hear your best buddy's latest mashup cobbled together in Reason XP Lite

I didn’t mean Apple specifically but rather an example of a DAW doing well after acquisition. But yeah I forgot about the Windows users losing Logic. I don’t know of any popular DAW acquisitions that went south aside from Gibson but Sonar recently got taken off of life support so no worries there.

But the idea of Apple buying Propellerhead... I guess the resultant software combination would be called Philosophy?

Not exactly a DAW, but Cool Edit Pro.

Evolution Studio when taken over by / became M-Audio (and then Digidesign/Avid). Okay, technically it was just a MIDI sequencer back then, but VST was uber young back then.

Muzys was purchased (just the source code, not the company), which took it off the market and the developer had to come out with MuTools. Even the free version that came with Computer Music was incredible.

Cool Edit Pro became Adobe Audition. I wouldn't call that south. The other 2 I'd never heard of. By popular I mean Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Ableton...etc...

Sonic Foundry was acquired by Sony and Acid was pretty much left to die.

Then there was Roland’s “strategic alliance” with Cakewalk, then Roland passing it on to Gibson, then Gibson shutting everything down. Bandlab to the rescue.

But then there’s Avid/Digidesign, Yamaha/Steinberg, Apple/Emagic - so far so good.

VST support made me realize how much I love REs.. I think you're using the wrong DAW.

After getting used to rewire again, it makes me realize that built in vst support is just there for when you don't wanna use other daws to access them.
Which is nice. But honestly rewire is the workflow that gives me exactly what I need lol
