I7 slower than I5 Reason??

Funny, I had just bought a quad core Mac mini 2011 Unibody, 8gb ram, I7 , 2.3 ghz with 250 SSD, running El Capitan and Reason 9. I find that Reason runs worse and uses much more cpu than on my Macbook Pro 13" Unibody single core , 2, 4ghz machine (Sierra) I even opened a song that could run ok on the Macbook Pro on my Mac mini and it said "Computer too Slow".. Weird. However Ableton Live runs much more efficiently and about 20% better cpu and less heat. Weird..Is the coding for Reason more geared to the I5 Processor?
Any thoughts?

Do you have multicore and multithreading enabled on the Mac Mini? Sounds like you don't.
Other than that, I'm assuming everything else - drivers, buffers, audio rate, etc. - are the same, because otherwise the comparison is ofcourse worthless...

Yes..It is checked in Reason 9.. All settings are the same..same audio buffers and card.

I heard High Sierra is dreadful on Audio performance.. I have Sierra on my Macbook and runs well though, maybe it is more optimized for I7? I know Ableton Live runs great so far on MacMini and everything else runs smoothly and snappy, just Reason gets a tough hit, especially running VST's. I run the same VST in Live and is much more efficent.

Just as a test, I tried Reason 10 and opened the demo - "airplane". After 40 seconds, the audio starts choking up and the song stops.. This is normal?
No.

Ok, So I will ask Propellerheads the question. This is odd I think.
Provided that the multicore settings are enabled, my immediate assumption would be the age of the Mac mini if the entire program runs better on the Macbook Pro (Your i5 is probably a dual core by the way). A newer i5 can in some cases be faster than an older i7. Reason's VST efficiency is a well known issue so comparing that to Live isn't a great comparison. Does the "Airplane" demo song choke up on your laptop?

Well, this is the weird twist in this situation. Everything runs better on my MacMini, but Reason. That's why I'm posting this question. Live runs much better, no heat issues, fan is quiet . The Macmini runs great, but Reason seems worse. I am stumped.
Again, its nothing spectacular. DSP load is not CPU load. Try comparing the performance at different buffer sizes (i.e. 128; 512; 2048) I‘m pretty sure the performance ratio between the two computers will shift with it and not stay the same - the i7 could still be slower though but the ratio will change.
Unfortunatelly, it's typical in Reason-on-Mac world. There were so many threads about it. I tested many VSTs, tested Reason, Ableton Live, Presonus Studio One v.3 (Artist and Professional) with the same conditions etc etc. Result is always the same: Reason on Mac eats more CPU and generally has worst efficiency comparing to other DAWs. I have Reason since version 5 on Mac, something wrong happened between R7 and R9.subtractor101 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2018Well, this is the weird twist in this situation. Ableton Live is really king on CPU, it's designed for stage so runs without crackling even on very low latency settings.

Ok, figured it out and happy! On my sound card the buffer was set for some reason at 192,000. I changed it to 44,100 and now it's really low DSP..Great!! Solved issue..
I think you mean sample rate.subtractor101 wrote: ↑21 Jan 2018Ok, figured it out and happy! On my sound card the buffer was set for some reason at 192,000. I changed it to 44,100 and now it's really low DSP..Great!! Solved issue..
