Hi,
I want to create a bold/arty/abstract/graphic-style vid for a future music release (retrowave/synthwave/electronica) and looking for any software recommendations. Either free-ware or paid is fine. I want to incorporate abstract shapes, textures, etc. - 3d would be nice, but not essential. Please help!

Cheers

not a software but the lowest barrier to entry would be to start by using some of beeple's video clips since he offers them for free https://vimeo.com/channels/beeple. For software it's hard to beat Blender3d which is free, but it has a really high learning curve if you've never worked with 3d software before https://www.blender.org/

Have a look at my youtube channel, may not be your style of music but you may get some ideas from it.

Software used.
Magic (paid software) big plus, takes midi input. in my video's my Nektar keyboard was done in that https://magicmusicvisuals.com/
http://www.vsxu.com/ Solar Dance was totally done with that.
Others
Milkdrop
Morphrye http://www.morphyre.com/

As pointed out, blender is top, unity and Epic are also free.

Marvellous, cheers emilng for that! There are some very striking clips on Beeple (never came across this site before). Blender looks great and seems quite similar to this:

I have just finished a year's work on an album and now the next stage is to market it with a single pre-release, thus I want to give it a visual angle as well. I know there's going to be a steep learning curve, but I've got some spare time now to dig in.

Thank you!

Oh yeah, that looks interesting, thank you Poohbear! The interaction with audio is just what I'm after, marvellous! I guess I'm going to be busy for the next months.

Thanks again!

Yeah +1 for Magic. It's really fantastic. It also has support for multi-track audio too so you can trigger different visuals with different elements in the song!

If you use a MAC you should check out ebosuite.

There is a demo version and if you do buy Magic it has to be the Magic Performer version for the midi stuff.

jitter maybe? its part of "max" which is paid software by cycling 74.
https://cycling74.com/products/max/
theres a subscription option (as well as a 1 off payment) so that might be useful if you just want to trial it first

i heard that abelton now includes the full version of max in "max for live" but im not sure whether that includes jitter or not
