Hi All!

I've had a look on Reason 8.3 and found nothing (don't know about 9.5 since lots of new sounds were added in Reason 9, but doubt it) but looking for Calliope (aka a Caliaphone) sounds or a sample to use in Reason.

Anyone know of anywhere I can purchase / get one?

For those that don't know, it's what's used in Circus music like Entry of the Gladiators. Not to be confused with the Wurlitzer (which is used in British seaside resorts playing songs such as "Over the Waves"). There are Wurlitzer patches in Reason.

Anyway, here is a video of the calliope.

Thanks!

Were any Calliope sounds added to Algoritm?

I suppose one could try to recreate the patch in Algoritm by copying the settings in PX7, it's FM for both, so it should be possible, right?

Maybe it is possible, but most FM-synthesizers including Algoritm lack the keyboard-scaling per operator that the DX7 (and therefore PX7) have. The cheapest option is to grab Dexed VST, which is free :puf_wink:

Yeah, sounds logical.

No, it doesn't. Algoritm is not a DX7 emulation. If you never programmed a DX7 (or straight emulation like PX7 or Dexed), you are missing the importance of the keyboard scaling curves and the eight-part envelopes. Those are the things that bring the details in a DX7 sound.

So I checked. I loaded the Calliope preset into PX7, and it makes extensive use of the keyboard scaling and the eight stages of the envelopes. When I remove the keyboard scaling for all operators, the preset still sounds somewhat as a Calliope, but not close enough to be convincing. Algoritm also has traditional four-stage envelopes, which, I think, will make it near impossible to re-create this sound, but someone will possibly prove me wrong on that :puf_bigsmile:
