Hi,

Being new to Reason I need some tips on how best to optimise Reason. I am running on Mid-2015 Macbook Pro with 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM and have an external LaCie USB 3.0 2TB Drive connected also. What can I put where? For example can I store all patches and samples on the LaCie and will that impact performance etc?

Thanks in advance :)

Cheers
Neil

The external drive will have an impact if you search big libraries or load big samples, but searching is also very slow on a SSD.

Why would searching be "very slow" on an ssd??

I dont know what Reason is doing, but file searching in OS without indexing is 1000 times faster.

Store your programs and Operating System on the SSD. Put the patches and stuff on the external drive.

Have no idea what version of OSX you're on, but you might find this guide useful:

I'd use that Lacie external to store patches, samples, song projects and keep everything self-contained in your song files, but make sure you have it backed up somewhere (either cloud or another external). Otherwise, you're inviting disaster at some undetermined point in the future.

Song projects will load noticeably faster from your SSD, though. But with such a small size, you could run out of room quick, so probably best to stick to that Lacie for data storage IMHO.

Keep your Reason cache file on the SSD, and frequently accessed projects/current projects should load pretty quick.

I have a 512gb SSD with Win 10 and a lot of bs installed. It's half full. The games are on an external drive.

The OP isn't on Win10; he's on OSX. A 256 GB SSD is small by today's standards, but should be plenty big enought to handle OS updates. Windows 10 as well. The rule of thumb is: if you have a smaller SSD (or even old fashioned mechanical HDD), don't fill it up! :puf_bigsmile: :puf_wink:

Always try to keep AT LEAST 10% free (20% is even better).
