Reason may be a pokier than alternatives when loaded up with 900 VSTs, but it sure is fun to use! If you really need to load up 900 VSTs, use an alternative. If you like having fun, use Reason. That's my take on it. :)
While I would normally agree, it should be said that the performance gap will likely only be of issue for folks who are used to working outside of Reason in other DAW but want to switch to Reason or shift much of their work over to Reason. When you're used to getting 2x or more instances of some of your favorite plugins, it's hard not to notice!

For those folks who have always been inside of Reason and/or just used RE's, this probably won't be very noticeable though.

Fortunately, I have meager needs. For those who don't; I sympathize.

I felt like I had more tools than I regularly used since Reason 5. Which is why I stuck to Reason & Cubase tbh.
Instead, it makes you focus on methods to achieve things.

"Waiting for the Horizon" - 3 DSP bars @ 256, playing a progression of 4 note chords. Something's up with your setup perhaps.

Sorry for the delay,
work swallowed my soul ...
anyway...

I tested again with browser closed and worked better, but,
I then compared the same patch in Reason and Reaper playing the same chord,
and in Reason is using way more CPU, look at the images:
