This topic should help users who need cutting edge performance to choose the best (or best modern performance/$) computer they can afford for Reason.
Included below are 2 songfiles designed to stress your computer to the max (mainly the CPU), using Reason 9.5+ devices:

Reason 9.5 2017 COMPLEX RE benchmark song V2 -----> http://s.go.ro/0tpcy7fd
The COMPLEX RE benchmark version is the the same old R8.1 benchmark song + new extra red tracks that will overpower contemporary affordable CPUs (2017). It seems that most quad cores can't play this song at all, as the stock RE included consume a lot of CPU power even when the song is not being played.

Reason 9.5 2017 Simple FX Chain benchmark song V0 ------> http://s.go.ro/vcuod0fq
The Simple FX Chain benchmark version is a totally new song that should run on Dual and Quad cores as well push the limits of new 2017 high end computers. It seems to favor Single Thread performance more than increased core count!

Please report the following when sharing your results:

Your CPU model (Intel i7 7700k, AMD R7 1800X, etc. & speed/overclocked Ghz)
The amount of RAM you have
Your audiocard Brand and Model
Your audiocard driver settings (sample rate 44100 Hz recommended and max buffer settings)
CPU Usage Limit must be set to 95% in Reason's settings
When playback stops / Computer too slow warning appears COMPLEX RE ----> (time)
When playback stops / Computer too slow warning appears Simple FX Chain ----> (time)

Enjoy!!!

PS.1 This is a continuation of the """"""Reason 8.1 & above CPU Stress Test (songfile included)!"""""" viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7263897

PS.2 Less powerful machines that can't play at all the R9.5 COMPLEX RE or the Simple FX Chain benchmark songs, they can gauge their relative performance in the older benchmark (link in PS.1)

PS.3 You don't need to upgrade your PC if it handles your Reason projects, these benchmarks songs are useful only if you really want or need to upgrade your Reason performance and don't want to waste money on a computer that may be only 10-20% better in Reason than your old computer.

PS.4 All results in this thread posted before 1st of June 2017 are of the COMPLEX RE benchmark version; Simple FX Chain was posted on 1st of June.

I got computer to slow when song was finished loading press ok then play and again before it even got to 1 sec. Guess I need a new computer soon.

iMac 21" late 2012
2.7 GHz intel Core i5
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 ram
MOTU 828x

Not necessarily. You can try the old benchmark and compare with the many results here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7263897

I made this new R9.5 benchmark song very demanding. It's not a synthetic benchmark with a lot of headroom, nor precision.
I don't think there's any desktop now that is going to play more than 36 seconds. But future CPUs should do much better and that is why we need something to compare the Reason performance with. It's all relative :ugeek:

don't try to convince me I don't need a new computer :D I know I don't need one but that does not stop me from wanting a new one and no wife to say no.

Great idea!

CPU usage limit set in Reason 8 = 95%
Sample rate = 44,100 Hz
Buffer length = 1024 samples (max )

Hardware:
CPU i7 6700K @ 4.00 Ghz / 4 cores (8 with hyperthreading)
RAM 16 GB
SSD Samsung 1 TB (Windows 7 64 bit + Reason installed on SSD)
RME Babyface Pro audio interface

Playback stops at... 1.5 seconds! I'm wondering how you get to 16 seconds with a relatively similar setup...

My 1.5 seconds was with 9.5 (latest non-logging, haven't updated yet), with 9.2 I get to 4 seconds. Weird, there shouldn't be any difference...

I think I know what the issue is, I have to EDIT the song file to automate the new PULSARs and Dr. OctoRex to play only at the start of their Combinator note track. This means that all above results are meaningless. Sorry I will put a new link to benchmark shortly.

Thx for the feedback. Maybe some more can provide their measurements. I have a feeling, that its faster...

Why don't you use the number of tracks your PC can run as the benchmark? That would be more universal and will run even on old computers. Basically set up a project with 100s of convolution reverb tracks that are disabled. The benchmark would be how many tracks you can successfully enable before your computer craps out.

You are right in the regard that it would run on more machines (meaning lower power ones), but the test would not resemble at all the complex production songs that I tend to do in Reason. That is why I made the benchmark song complex (heavy RE processing) in the fist place, to help me find out what is the next best $/CPU(for Reason) for upgrading my computer with :)

This song file won't play back at all on my system without immediately pop/crack/distort for half a second and then too slow. :( I'm not sure which tracks to start deleting to get to a point where it will start playing back in some semblance of normalcy, though I gather that that's not the point of this song file.

Can you disable your LAN adapter after opening the song, also change the Latency to max (should be 1024 for RME Babyface) and then retest?
Anyway, I don't expect i7 3770 play more than 4 seconds.

I'm really curious of how much the 8+ cores i7s and Xeons would play.. I don't have much hope for Ryzen though.

I can disable the LAN adapter before or after - shouldn't matter if the song is all stock devices. I'll test and see what happens.

I already tried this - no change.

As it stands now, I can't even make it to 1 second! Lol

Lol! Man, Ryzen just seems to get hammered. We've got a few people who have known Ryzen builds here - hopefully they'll chime in to this thread (Lizard and JP are two that I know of).

Not just here either.

It's not that it's getting hammered it's just difficult to see a benefit against the comparitively priced 6800k which sits on a far more mature and instantly upgradeble platform where we already know there's available chips (yes, overpriced currently, but for how long now?) that wipe the floor with Ryzen.

I want AMD to kick Intel in the nuts as much as the next guy but the reality is, it hasn't happened YET!

Don't forget that 9.5 users can now setup the industry recognized DAWBench now as well whcih has been developed over many years to provide reliable benchmark results. It would be easy enough to adapt it for Reason for anyone who has the time.

http://www.dawbench.com/benchmarks.htm

I wouldn't expect like for like comparisons between it and other DAWs though being as it differs somewhat in that most DAW's use plugins for much of their functionality whereas Reason has a Rack full of stuff right out of the gate.

Another thing with this test you have here, which pretty much renders it useless, is that there is such a heavy load right out of the gate there is no way of gauging efficiency under more realistic loads.

Looks like the forthcoming Intel i9 may be wiping the floor even more... at an insane price, of course:

That's the best thing about Ryzen, it may not be the world-beater yet but it has kicked off a good scrap...

Interesting.

2011 iMac
3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 (I7-2600: 4 cores, 8 cores with hyper threading)
24 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Can't even get off the ground.

There are dozens of "Intel Core i7" CPU's. Do you know which model you actually have?
