Hi
There is no best way. Not like you are thinking.
The way to re-invent a piece is to either see what it lacked and add that (a bigger 909) or to simply take the piece into an new and unexpected place (like Pet Shop Boys turning U2's "Streets With No Name" into a Disco song and adding a 60's classic for good measure).
Getting the tempo is probably a good practical place to start and if you haven't seen it then there is a recent Blog from Props showing you exactly how to do that if you only have audio. Of course if you have MIDI then you can simply start by swapping sounds for different ones.
