i have two i7 pc's one is an older music built i7 920 processor (16 gb ram ) which only lasted 19 seconds before stopping!
the other is my general purpose pc i7 4785t processor (8gb ram) which lasted 36 seconds,
so against what i was told it's not just the amount of cores the processor has, the i7 920 is about 5 or 6 years old and the 4785t is new this year,

can anyone explain what's the difference between my two pc's that make one last longer in the bench test?

i am thinking about building a AMD fx 8350 8 core pc, because propellerheads support told me the more cores the better,
but would it be much better than my current pc's?

Time to buy a new computer. My late 2009 iMac can't even start the song. :(

I just build a new PC and It broke the stresstest  . It managed to play out the entire thing without crackles.

i7 5930K (6core), Asus X99 motherboard, 32Gig ram, Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD.
Not overclocking.
Motu 828 Mk3 Hybrid on USB.
44.1Khz, buffer @512samples.

If you had the CPU Usage Limit must set to 95% in Reason's settings and it played the whole project without stopping than that's awesome!

Had previous results that looked something like this:

"•Intel i3 M 380 @2.53Ghz - no OC
•6GB RAM
•Asio Mbox2 Mini
•44100 Hz 1024 b/speed
•CPU Useage Limit 95%
•Playback stops 1.1.1.89 That's 0:00:00:046 of a second :s0959: With Internet Explorer open!
• Without IE no backround programs reason set to high priority stops at 1.1.3.113 0:00:00:309/s"

Brand new build first thing I had to do was get better results:

•Intel i7-4790k @4.0Ghz - Not even overclocked yet!!
•16gb
•Asio Mbox2 Mini
•44100 Hz 4096 b/speed
•37.4.2.233 0:01:13:747 @ 95% :geek:
•30.3.4.130 0:00:59:443 @ 80% :ugeek:

I will post again if I decide to overclock. Not bad if I say so myself for a build well under €1000

It is indeed a good Friday!
It is not too much of an ask for people or things to be the best version of itself!

Very impressive results when considering that E3-1230 V3 costs less than mainstream i7 !!!

PS. I suspect you forgot to set the CPU limit to 95% in reason preferences. This is how we all test.

I have a similar build (i7 6700K), and I get to around 53 seconds. I noticed the same thing as you; it's not utilizing all four cores on mine either. Cores 1, 2, and 4 are doing their thing, but 3 is just sort of sitting there doing nothing. I wonder why that is.

This is by design. One core is left alone for all other processes, like gui updates and the like. It can also be used by the system if something needs to be done.
This is the reason that older 6 core CPUs at 3.5ghz outperform newer 4ghz quad cores. A 6 core runs rendering on 5, vs a quad core on 3.. my 2 year old i7 5930 6core runs the entire thing without a hiccup. More cores don't always win with every application, but in this particular usecase of reason audio rendering, more cores win.

Thanks eauhm, that makes sense. Sort of weird that they set aside an entire core for that (or probably not weird, just seems that way to me). 25% of the average user's cores aren't used for audio rendering.

That actually reminds me of something I've been wondering for awhile. Does the GPU do any of the work rendering the GUI, or is that all handled by the processor? Just wondering if discrete graphics cards are doing any of the lifting.

I don't know. Dev's may know but they can't tell because of the NDA :P
I doubt that Reason uses the kind of mechanics that games use (like opengl directx and thelike) to leverage the GPU.

I get to 50 seconds with my brand new system:

Intel Core i7-6700k 4Ghz (not overclocked)
32Gb RAM (DDR4, 2100 mhz)
Samsung 950 Pro 256GB M.2 disk
Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 external USB 2 soundcard
Windows 10 64-bit
532 samples
44,1 khz

In retrospect it seems I should have bought a 6-core CPU... :|

Hi Reason-Talkers,

I`m new to reasontalk and want to share my experience with the songfile.
My subnotebook with i7 6500U CPU, 8GB played almost 2 seconds of this funky housetrack ;-)

Now I got a new confguration running:

2 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5570 @ 2.93GHz
16GB RAM
Windows 7 Pro / Reason 8.3
Scarlett 2i4 USB @ 44,1 kHz / 442 Samples
CPU-Usage in Reason: 95%

playback stops @ 56 seconds. Bar/Song Position: 29.1.2.125
played without crackling

thanks for sharing your experiences

Custom Built System

Asus Z170 Maximus VIII Hero
i7 6700k No O/C Yet
24GB DDR RAM 2133
M2 256GB System SSD
480GB Sandisk Extreme Pro Dedicated to Reason files
GTX 980TI Gaming GPU
Windows 10 Home

44100 Audio max buffer using Saffire 6 External USB interface and driver

Currently getting 56 seconds sorry didnt record the bar number but will try again after I push the CPU up to 4.5 Ghz but not expecting a huge difference. Same results in Reason 9 also so interesting that the new program does not improve performance..

Here's my benchmark results.

CPU : AMD FX 8350 4 ghz 8 core (no OC)
RAM: 2 x 4gb (single channel 1600 mhz)
motherboard: gigabyte 990fxa
OS : Windows 10 64 bit
Audio Interface: Focusrite scarlet 2i4
Buffer size: 960 samples
settings: sample rate 44100 hz cpu limit 95%
Playback stop @ Bar - 11.1.3.45, seconds - 20.3s

Changed it to asio4all driver with buffer size 2048 samples and got a second and a half extra playtime.

I am quite disappointed to say the least. Not that I have some crazy machine but still I expected it to perform a little better.
I still haven't run into such problems in my own songs though. :)
