Just to let you know: There are companies, that buy power-workstations from ended leasing-contracts, refurbish/customise them, and sell to consumers. I bought my 3 year old 8-core Xeon E5-2660 Dell for 650€ here in Finland. 12months warranty.

Now I see I could get the 2 x 6 core v3 version of same CPU family for same prise.

After small OS optimisations etc., it has been my first totally problem-free music making computer ever hehe

Just did this test again. I got 26 sec with Reason 8.3. but now only 5 sec with Reason 9.1 - wow...

Maybe it's not just R9, can you check if your CPU is being thermal throttled?

How do I check that?

Edit, there's two differences in my setup: I had 16 GB RAM , now half of it (8Gb) and my audio intereface ain't the same as the last time.

Hey, sorry for the late reply!

TO check for thermal throttling you could install Real Temp (https://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/) and run it's XS Bench test (if I remember correctly it gradually increases the CPU load).

So while the XS Bench test is running in Real Temp, you could also monitor the CPU voltage and frequency with CPU-Z ( http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html ), if the voltage and frequency of the CPU drops while the CPU load is increasing, then the CPU is thermal throttled.

If indeed thermal throttling is the issue, you could fix it by cleaning the CPU Cooler or checking the thermal paste under it or get better and silent fan.

I bought my workstation Dell laptop this way. Excellent way to buy media computers.

what i really do not understand is, why on OSX Reason needs more CPU than on Windows. Funny thing, on a Macbook Pro the test song stops at 30 seconds, whereas with the same computer with bootcamp i get to 40 seconds. this sucks. btw i got the newest and most upgraded macbook pro you can get and only 30 seconds (starts crackling already at 20 seconds) is sad.

Thanks the kind words, but it wasn't that much work at all :) There are other regular users that really contribute immensely on this great forum :)

By the way, I just sent the order for a new CPU - AMD Ryzen R7 1700X. I hope I also can buy the motherboard in 1-2 weeks time and I'll run the benchmark and post the results afterwords:)

He Kategra,

On my MacBookPro i7 2820QM this test performs fine and I get this message after 12 seconds. A really quick response and good performance of this test.

Today I got a new computer from my mother and now I'm in trouble to get this benchmark score.

The "CPU usage limit" is set to 95%, but this damn "Computer too slow" warning doesn't appears :x . What the hell is going on.

In the attachment is a screenshot with all informations.

Haha, I'm going to take the bait on this post and say:

1. Your mother sure wants you to make music, that's why she bought you a server with 10 core CPU for you to enjoy :P Xeon E5 2630 :D
2. This "benchmark" song file is getting old and fast processors like yours play it trough without stooping, which means your computer is more powerful than what the song needs to play to the end.
3. If you really miss the "Computer too slow", you could try to play the song again, but this time with the sample rate set at 96kHz, and then post your result here :)

Does anyone know if cheaper RAMs affect the speed of your CPU?

If your cheap ram isn't faulty, then don't expect noticeable increase in Reason performance upgrading it. Maybe it you could see some improvement if you have the slowest of the slowest RAM installed in your PC. Like using 1033 MHz RAM in a DDR3 motherboard which may support DDR3 even higher frequency than 2133 Mhz.

It's been on loop for 30 minutes or so. DSP not going above 50% Will try higher rate.

EDIT: 26 seconds at 96,000 sample rate

With the launch of AMD Ryzen it's suddenly become possible for mere mortals to acquire 8 core CPUs. How well does Reason scale with number of cores?

Ok, my old RAMS were removed from my PC and replaced by some cheaper ones. I had 16 Gb RAM, now half of it (8Gb).
I don't know why my CPU Stress test gives me half less playing time, I get to 12.559. Last time on Reason 8.3. I got like 24 seconds.
My buffer was 128. Anyhow when using more buffer (2048) I get to 20 seconds. All my songs run fine so far, but I think I need to start save money for a better PC.

My current PC specs:
Acer
Aspire M3970
Intel(R) Core (TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40Ghz, 8Ghz RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit Service Pack 1

I just did the test with Reason 8.3 and.... got 4 seconds further than with 9.2.
I got to 16:605.

With max buffer (2048) I got to 21:548

With REASON 9.2.2 under SIERRA 10.12.3.

Mac Pro (Mid 2010) _ 2 x 3,06 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
RAM Memory : 24 GB.
Graphic Card : ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
with RME Fireface 800 .

44,1k,512 samples buffer, 95% CPU --> This Project can run entirely in a loop .
With 256 samples buffer, a little cracking and slowing down is felt.

With REASON 8.3. in Windows 10 ( Old OS from my old Intel cpu I5 3570K system )

CPU: AMD R7 Ryzen 1700X
Motherboard: Gigabyte B350 AB Gaming 3 with F5 BIOS
RAM Corssair LPX 3000Mhz dual channel 2X8GB (seems to run @2133 Mhz..)
MSI 1060 GTX 6GB
SSD Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB

RME Fireface 400 .

44,1k,1024 samples buffer, 95% CPU --> Stock CPU speed -> 1 minute and 1 seconds
44,1k,1024 samples buffer, 95% CPU --> CPU OC to 3.9 Ghz-> 1 minute and 9 seconds

Tomorrow I will try do a fresh OS install if I have the time, but I don't think it will change the result too much.
The performance over my old I5 3570K system seems to be close to double.. But I expected this new CPU to play it trough the whole project without stopping.

The mas native bandwidth of that RAM is rated @ 2133 Mhz. Its XMP profile is 3000 Mhz so you would have to set it's frequency in your BIOS to run at that speed and set the voltage to 1.35v. Check your MB manual for details to set your ram up to use its XMP profile it maybe running at that speed already but just reporting it's native speed,

You're all mentioning the Graphic Card when using a Mac. But Reason won't use this dedicated graphics card only the integrated one which uses CPU cycles and might cause some glitching.

I did that yesterday, but I got conflicting reporting about the RAM speed. CPU-ID 2133 vs Easy Tune ~2900 vs some in BIOS live stats that appear just in the first few seconds of entering the BIOS menu (those freq stats of the DDR4 fluctuate between 2133 and 2600)

I did another test, but this time with SMT=off, making the CPU 8 core and only 8 threads. This improved the benchmark with 7 extra seconds of play.

Old Windows install used for Intel i5 3570k system
CPU: AMD R7 Ryzen 1700X
Motherboard: Gigabyte B350 AB Gaming 3 with F5 BIOS, with SMT off
RAM Corssair LPX 3000Mhz dual channel 2X8GB (seems to run @2133 Mhz or 2933??

I notice that Gigabyte recommend dialling the XMP figure back a tad, (if you look on the approved memory device list) so it looks like the 2933 Mhz figure is the correct one once the OS is up and running and Easy Tune is doing its thing.
