Included below is a songfile designed to stress your computer (mainly the CPU), using Reason 8.1+ devices:

Reason 8.1 2015 benchmark song

This topic should help users who need more performance to choose the best (or best $/performance) computer they can afford for Reason.

Please report the following when sharing your results:
  • Your CPU model (Intel i7 3770k, AMD FX 8350, etc) and clock speed - as well as whether or not you are overclocking
  • The amount of RAM you have
  • Your audiocard Brand and Model
  • Your audiocard driver settings (sample rate 44100 Hz recommended and max buffer settings)
  • CPU Useage Limit must be set to 95% in Reason's settings
  • When playback stops / Computer too slow warning appears ----> (bars & time)

R8 benchmark preferences.png
Enjoy!!!

PS. This is a continuation of the R7 stress topics that where posted by EnochLight and me. If needed we can resurrect the R7+ stress song, but in a different topic.

Played the benchmark song again today, right after I booted into Win8 and got a better result - 36 seconds :) Anyways it's quite an old OS install, I think it will survive until I upgrade to Win10.

Nice post!

Before your Benchmarksong i had the opinion, that my PC is unusual slow. but it seems, that is not the case?

My result with R 8.1 64 Bit is that the warning Computer too slow to play song stops the playback
@ 48 seconds

CPU usage limit set in Reason 8 = 95%
Sample rate = 44,100 Hz
Buffer length = 1024 samples
Hardware:
CPU i7 4770 @ 3,4 Ghz

 I'm using vintage gear.

 AMD Phenom II 955 @ 3.2 Ghz
 6 GB DDR2
 M-Audio AP2496
 W7 Pro
Stopped at 4.4 sec.  Interesting I got the same result with the ASIO buffers set at 512 and 1024.

Great result, I was expecting less. Quite surprising!  4790K with same RAM, Audio Interface and settings should score a little higher.

I think Propellerhead should implement better CPU optimisation in the next upgrade, which uses all available cores.

It is so frustrating, that a Reason song stops and the 4'th core off a Quadcore CPU isn't used at all.

By the way, is it normal that with a Quadcore CPU which has 8 virtual Cores in the taskmanager Reason
uses only 3 virtual Cores. The taskmanager shows me 35% CPU usage and the CPU meter in Reason is on max.

I'm sorry, that IS an I7 4790k...  My bad.
You can't even OC a 4790, and it has a stock CPU speed quite lower.

I think you can juice it up a bit, maybe if you use a better graphics card (im using the GPU in the I7), and faster ram, though at the time i bought OCZ @ 1600 Mhz because the CPU did not go faster, but once you start OC'ing you can benefit from faster rams chips... I also did some tests and with the hardware i have it hits a 11000 in CPU mark test without oc, and i saw the common difference was a better GPU.

I remember testing this rig with the previous document with R7. With no oc, it stopped very near the end, with the 4.2GHz oc, it would stop at the same time as Adam Fielding's test which had a 6 core, and @ 4.4 GHz it run the whole document without a single glitch. :)
I think this CPU can take a hit of 4.7 GHz with air, 5 Liquid (i could get it to 4.6 with the stock cooler, stable!!!!). So, if i ever need a little more juice, i'll invest in some better cooling. :)

I had a Q6600 with 6 years that died on me last summer. I could debug but i was already thinking about a new pc for the studio, so instead of loosing time bugging the problem i built this rig. Reason 8 runs like a charm, and most of my projects that were hitting almost full dsp bars, only hit 1 or 2 now!

Yes, the task manager shows 35% CPU usage, but the available real CPU for reason only counts with real cores. Since only 3 are working for DSP, you have only 37,5% of the amount of CPU the OS "Thinks" he has available, for DSP. The result is that when you hit 35% you're almost at 100% of those 3 cores CPU capability!

This being said, i don't know any application that scales CPU equally between physical and virtual cores (actually audio applications wont be good at that at all), however Reason is the only one i know to force affinity to graphics.
IMHO i'd prefer a bit chunkier graphics and MOAR DSP! :)

PS.: I also notice this isn't deterministic (nor the other test was). If i make the test several times, it will range from 57 sec to 1:04. It can be issues external to Reason but i can't pinpoint them...

Yes, it's not an super accurate benchmark.

Also, I see that there is a higher gap between quad core i5 VS i7 in this R8 benchmark than it was in the old R7 benchmark. Granted the BPM is slower, but still the i7 can take a lot more in this scenario :)

When i bought it, the 4790k was the best valued CPU/Price around.
You'd just go a check that at any performance site, and it was unanimous, for CPU's on the 10000's cpu rate at CPU tests.

If money was not an issue, i would have gone for a 6 core. Getting a 6 core, would mitigate a bit the loss of one core in reason, but it adds from 300 to 500 eur to the toll (different chipsets = costier Mboards and no Graphics card plus the price of the CPU itself is about 200 usd higher for the entry 6core). But even today if you compare a 4core i7 to the first 6 core (i think it is clocked at 2,6???? ) you can expect a price tag 300 usd higher to the whole rig.

About the i5 vs i7, my guess is that some tasks might benefit from the virtual cores, and something might have changed in Reason 8, but more in the way the tasks might have been coded rather than a conscientious action to force HT. To my knowledge this is not possible, since it's the OS and the CPU itself that manages that.

Also there are so many variables at stake that i don't know if we can have a Cause Effect conclusion between I5 and I7...For example, ram speed, and audiocards are quite important for DSP, and we are focusing a lot on CPU only... Maybe when the R8 test has a good amount of data from different systems, we can get a better idea of that.

BTW, An interesting point of view from gamers is that Core I5's, can take more aggressive OC's than I7, so if one plans to OC it might be an idea.

Don't think mine counts, but just in case someone else has a similar setup:

Windows 7 SP1 , i5 M460, 2.53 GHz, 4GB Ram
ASIO4ALL (the latest one as of this post) 44.1k, 1024 buffer size.

Nothing else open (ended all other processes), reason only.

Song goes to... wait for it... 1.1.2.127 (beats and bars measurement). At the most.

Because I don't know what hyperthreading/overclocking is, I'm assuming, I'm not doing it.

You're obviously not doing overclocking (since you would physically have to do it in order to make it happen), but your CPU does in fact support Hyperthreading.  It's probably enabled by default, but you can check by right-clicking on your task bar and selecting "Start Task Manager".  Click the "Performance" tab and see how many cores show up under "CPU Usage History".

Your CPU only has 2 physical cores, but if Hyperthreading is enabled, you'll see 4 graphs displayed.  The other two are "virtual" cores.

As far as what Hyperthreading is, read this:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading

  • CPU: Intel i7 4790 @ 3.6GHz (no overclocking)
  • RAM: Crucial 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
  • Soundcard: Emu 0202 USB
  • 44100Hz, 11264 samples (max buffer)
  • CPU usage limit @ 95%
  • playback stops @ 23.1.4.130 / 0:00:44:443
With a slightly more "normal" buffer setting @ 704 samples it stops at 18.3.3.149 / 0:00:35:328. Bit disappointed :)
