Question: Detecting Tempo

Is there a known method of detecting the tempo of a song project using stock devices or hardware? What I would like to do is apply a slight amount of pitchbend depending on the tempo speed of the song project. Any ideas how this could be done? Maybe through midi or remote overrides?

Tempo-synced LFO controlling the pitch wheel, drum track controlling the LFO !

Don't take much notice of that suggestion if it doesn't work, I'm a CV novice.
