I would like to move the sound banks to an external SSD. I don't see a method of setting the default locations?

I'm running MacOS, but it doesn't seem possible... ?

I had no luck on OSX with moving the REs, either using an Alias or using a symlink. But I was able to relocate the Optional Devices Content using a simple Alias. This freed up almost 4GB. (Pangea, Klang, Humana and Radical Piano).
