Look at the bright side, Reason+ users will be our beta testers :)
I wish the subs lot would speak up and tell us why they think paying more in the long run and not having ownership of software helps them as creatives in precarious times? Or at least join in on this conversation! How do they justify getting early access when others have to wait due to financial difficulties? My guess is they keep silent cos they know how un-democratic Reason+ is especially within the context of a struggling music community.
Wtf seriously???

You think the world of business isn't struggling? You think software is some democratic right? This could possibly be one of the stupidest thing I have ever seen on this forum. For real, everybody is struggling because of the pandemic and make it something about yourself and entitlement to get something and point fingers at people that chose to subscribe is a new low!

I'm really so out of here!

Anyone remember somewhere on the website it said perpetual licenses will grant a years worth of updates?
If that was the case it won't stop me upgrading but depending on what happens it would influence wether I made a future R13 purchase or not.
Buying software updates and factoring in point updates is always going to be a bit of a gamble anyways.
There's been mention of support for up to one year, which has always been in the terms of service. They had mentioned this in a comparison only to highlight the ongoing support you receive when you subscribe, which is natural. I think it confused some people and they might've removed it from that page? Not removed from the terms of service through... But yes, one year of support has always been mentioned in the terms of service for Reason and is similar for most other software.

Yeah, there’s nothing to say against the upgrade. The new open communication is also good, is a bit confusing at first. Reading the word "Sequencer" somewhere would be nice, but maybe (hopefully ) later.

And btw this was also about the subscription, if I remember correctly:

True, we can direct any subscription specific talk to that thread...if not the OG Reason+ thread lol

Let's all try to keep this thread more about Reason 12 and speculation about its features if possible. I know it all ties together as you consider options of upgrading and subscribing... There's also a May Madness thread where people can discuss their purchasing decisions there.

I don't think that was ever listed. I know thats the Pro Tools model

They are listening ;)

At one point I was making mockups of "modular" combinator designs, so this is very exciting! (although it's probably not "modular" as I anticipated, it's welcome either way). Customizable cmb was something many of us brought up over the years.

Interested to check out the sampler and other features(if any)

Thanks for the update!

no Suite version this time?
No, Reason Suite is discontinued. If you have Reason 11 Suite you can of course still upgrade to Reason 12 for the regular upgrade price and you keep all your REs.
If I'd known that, I would have gotten Reason Suite 11 :( I sent an email asking for clarifications on what the plan was there when Suite was announced, but not no answer. And all of a sudden it was discontinued.
Currently on Reason 12. Very disappointed with the updates in the last two versions.

Not gonna lie. I'm salty the upgrade discount isn't available for us on 11. Live 11 was announced like in November and then released in February I think, and the upgrade price was discounted. I was on 10 and jumped on it. I wish I could do the same right now. 🤷‍♂️

I can live with 12 months of support. Never had a need of support yet anyway.

This is a pretty strong update. Perhaps the biggest yet? Hd is a must, new sampler is really looking overdue and will probably be completely automateable, time stretching, and have good slice features (might put dr octorex out of a job?)
Combinator 2 is super exciting, and is gonna put Reason back at the top of the game for rack/modular workflow.
Anything else (and I'm sure there will be other tweaks and additions) will be a bonus.

Well the situation here is that those upgrading for $90 (or $80) are coming from earlier versions, so they are paying to get R11...They are only receiving an upgrade to R12 later, but ultimately their money is going towards buying R11. For RS to offer R12 for purchase to you now, you would be buying it pretty much in the dark. They gave us bullet points and a pretty vague teaser. And even at a discount, that puts the customer and RS in a tough situation because you may not like R12. The customer who upgrades today to R11, if they are disappointed in R12...well they bought R11, a product they could see and try.

I haven't paid attention to how Ableton does it, but perhaps they give you a little more to go on when preordering instead of just bullet points? I'm sure RS wouldn't be against the idea of selling R12 ahead of time, but my guess is they want the customer to see more of it before making that decision. Otherwise aside from a sale price, they'd be selling you R12 upgrade today for $129.

Still a bit confused about perpetual route vs Reason+.

€90 is a good price for upgrade, but as many other, I have R11, so will have to wait til Sept.
And then there is the 30%. off sub. to R+, €40 more than the original deal. Making me refuse that option also and if R12 upgrade will be more expensive at release, I will just stick with R11 ”sweet” blurry mess until a good enough deal.

As DAW side is concerned, well, now RS only calls it a ”plugin”. So what was all the talk about not forgetting the DAW side of Reason?
It seems also R12 is all about the Rack plugin side. So will 12.5 bring anything else? Or R13?

Will have to wait til release day and ask then.

It’s not about hating subscriptions. It’s about being concerned about the ethics and politics of such systems in 2021. Especially as the users of Reason are musicians - many are struggling financially. I’m looking forward to R12 perpetual license and hope I’ll have work in September so I can buy it. And then if I’m out of work in December I can still be creative and make music - something I wouldn’t be able to do if I only had my sub. It’s not about being jealous of others. I’m happy if people have continual employment, and can pay monthly. I just don’t like to be part of a community where people get shut out to creative activity just because they can’t afford a sub.
There’s nothing unethical about an optional subscription. The fact that it’s optional means no one’s being shut out of anything. I’m sorry your personal work situation isn’t stable, but that’s not a reflection of the world. The majority of users likely aren’t full time musicians to begin with (they make money elsewhere), and the ones that are: many of which have multiple streams of income to cope with months where gigs are scarce. In a world where subscriptions to Amazon, Netflix, Apple Music, YouTube red/YouTube music, HBO Max...etc...are common place (often a few of these at once, $20 a month really isn’t that much in the grand scheme of things.

Let’s look at this another way. In September you hope to have $129 to pay for Reason 12. With Reason+ you’d only have spent $20 of your income for that month instead of $129. That means you’d have money left over.

VST 3 in a 11.x update would put a sock in a few mouths for a bit

btw. I think pre releasing features to subscribers before license holders can buy the upgrade is a crappy thing to do.
It’s been mentioned, but who would you prioritize? Fans that are paying you regularly or fans that pay you once a year or 2? They’re literally paying for that benefit. When you’ve paid for a product in the perpetual sense, you’ve already gotten what you paid for. Anything else outside of a bug fix is a gift.

The way it works is perpetuals get the whole package at once. Subscribers get features as they’re ready. Aside from jealousy and FOMO, perpetuals have the same deal they’ve always had.
Wow, you are easily mugged! They literally created a situation where they are charging you for what they used to provide as a courtesy and you are immediately defending that. I know they can do as they wish but I see it as like a restaurant charging me for tap water and to use the bathroom. I don't give a crap about fomo. But my experience of software that switches to subscription is that the experience for those who don't want to sub gets worse and worse as an incentive to make them sub. This looks like the start of that and it is crappy.

So what will happen to the NN-XT after this new sampler arrives, just sit there doing nothing 'cause I'm guessing this sampler will put it to a shame?
Reason 12 also includes a brand new sampler. Sampling really is an integral part of music production and often the best way to add that magical "something-something" to your sound. This sampler goes way beyond what's available in Reason today. It's designed to quickly explore and play back sounds in interesting ways—be that from your collection of samples, something recorded on the fly, or even an export of the very track you're working on. There are loads of cool features in there, like our legendary time stretch and brand new ways to play your samples, and I can't wait to show you more soon.

Like the guy in the video I get the feeling the new sampler is not a traditional sampler like NN-XT, but one that's more like Serato Sample. I already have Serato Sampler and although I don't care much for auto-chopping, the timestretching/pitchshifting is great. I don't really need another sampler to do that. Still I'm curious to see if RS can take it to another level with their new sampler.

Software socialism. Yay!

So to be clear, it IS about money. RS is a business. They have bills to pay. The employees don't work for free. If they don't make income, they go out of business. Perhaps Joey 's book club should offer some books covering introductory principles of business.
Nah mate. It’s called Conscious Capitalism.
It's not like RS are making Chinese kids work for pennies an hour to program REs (how are you enjoying your Apple products, by the way?).
No matter how hard you squint your eyes and look sideways at the subscription business model, it's intellectually dishonest to claim that it somehow violates business ethics.

And the attitude that anything is owed to you. Give me a break.
Players are to MIDI what synthesizers are to waveforms.

I think most of us had given up the dream of a configurable Combinator years ago...

Really looking forward to this. I hope it will be easy to program as said in the notes. I also hope that this is a statement for the future and maybe we can create "modules" inside the Combinator at some point. This way i could just link a "FX" to a 3 "Layered Instruments". And i am really curious, if RS will continue to improve the all-mighty Combinator in future

Hum...i just thought about the "recording" thing said about the new sampler. Would be interesting if the new sampler could record something which is connected to a aduio in by a trigger (CV or automatable), which would allow to change the content on the fly and create interesting fx...Yea, i guess dreaming is ok....

And btw, its good, that such a sampler is build-in into Reason, which makes patch creation and sample libraries creation interesting.

Joey, you are missing a very important point. It's not really about R11.
Right now users on R10 and below can effectively pre-purchase the upgrade to R12 at 30% off by buying the R11 upgrade during the sale.
Users already on R11 will most likely have to pay full price for the R12 upgrade in September.

In other words, there is a cheaper route to R12 for users who had not already upgraded to R11. That's not very fair and that's the reason you'll see several R11 owners on here asking if they can buy the upgrade to R11 again, just to get the discount on R12!

OMG the whining about R+ and so-called missing DAW features.

1. You don't have to subscribe if you don't want to. Why whine about it?
2. Whatever you think is missing in Reason's DAW can be found in another DAW. Go buy that other DAW and be done with it you cheap bastard! You can still use Reason within it.

I suppose the new sampler is more of an answer to Ableton Live Simpler sampler, but probably RS try to take it further in their own way. Really excited about seeing it soon on youtube as a R+ gadget, although, getting to learn it until Sept 1st.

A super combinator is a dream come true for sure.

What RS does right is that they recognize the potential of a common platform, with building custom combinators with more or less stock RE’s. That will eventually make it a must have for most.

Sooner or later I might get on R+ but R12 with higher resolution and minimum support of OSx 10.13, makes me want to safeguard the version I may fall back to if later going R+ when more devices are added in that package.
For next big upgrade might demand a computer upgrade too, so then I might take a break until being able or wnting to buy new computer.

As a 11 user I totally get your point but also at this time we do not know what offers will be available for 12 upgrade from 11. It may be even cheaper or the same $90 price in september and then we will also have a better idea of what we are buying. Totally agree if it is $129 in September that it will not feel good though. Just have to wait and see.

My 2 cents if the new sampler isn't like Serato Sample meaning Key Detection and the ability to use both Rex & Wav samples then what's the point I rather just stick with Serato Sample...
