Do you use Blocks when composing?
I hardly ever use them but wonder whether I should try again? What do they offer you? Do they work better for certain styles?
I actually used them for the first time today. Not sure if I like them or not.
I use them to color code sections of a song. There's nothing actually in them though.

I tried Blocks a couple of times, but can't really wrap my head around it (and fine a use for my workflow).
What I *wish* they did was emulate a feature I love in Sonar: Linked clips. In Sonar, I can take a clip, and copy it many times such that they're all COPIES of the same clip (edit one, and they all change). It's super useful when I want to do some quick layout/composition of various parts.
Every time I try Blocks, that's sort of what I hope I can get out of it. But Blocks are, of course, completely different.

Use them all the time. I mostly create all my breaks, leads, changes, intros, outros etc in one block then just copy it and compose the song like a grid muting unmuting tracks. Although it gets tricky with lots of tracks like that. I hope they can come up with a better way to visually identify them better when in song mode cause they all tend to be the same color than when inside the block
I love using them as sketch pads (as in SO3).. Idky, but i find myself feeling more free to let loose when i know it's not in song mode. idk. lmao.
I didnt figured out how to use them but watched a youtube tutorial last week, i´ll start usig them in my next session.

yep on every song that i've done in Reason since the feature launched.
blocks are great to sketch out ideas and the overriding in song mode is brilliant. wish the blocks list dropdown was a little better though (duplicate a block and reorder list functionality)
overall though great feature and one I miss when composing in other DAWs.

Thanks. I appreciate your replies
I think I was hoping it would be mainly 'no' so I could forget blocks. Seems I have some more reading and trial work to do.

I use blocks in my live settings. Each block is a song with backing tracks and tempo track. So i can switch easely between songs.
i have 4 controlers with a dedicated combinator, so for the next song i chance the combinators and block and i'm ready to go.

That's pretty genius. I might have to give them another shot.dancing fool wrote:I use blocks in my live settings. Each block is a song with backing tracks and tempo track. So i can switch easely between songs.

This is something I want to try also.dancing fool wrote:I use blocks in my live settings. Each block is a song with backing tracks and tempo track. So i can switch easely between songs.

I use it as song starter too.
In my dreams, there are multi blocks lanes with a play button (i remember some magix music thing in '98 with this feature)

I'm still not getting this. What does the combinator have to do with it?dancing fool wrote:I use blocks in my live settings. Each block is a song with backing tracks and tempo track. So i can switch easely between songs.
