Hardware for the Orion intro?

Hello all, I'm trying to use hardware--instruments, synths, pedals, organs, whatever--- to get a particular thick pad I have in my imagination. The closest thing I can think of is the bass intro to Metallica's Orion. Consistent, Distorted, Thick, but not too distorted. In a tweener space between a thick note from a moog and a full-on pad. Where would you all start looking? I've already searched the web for that particular sound, and there is no definitive answer, lots of suggestions for rotary and potentially a B3 organ, or a bass synth pedal.

Thanks for any suggestions; I'm going to the ends of the earth for this sound in my imagination!

Orion by Metallica: for what I heard, it is the footpedal tones of a Hammond organ, slightly distorted, or overdriven with a rotary speaker.

I do not think it is a Moog, or a Moog Taurus.

Appreciate it! Do you know much about Hammonds? Do you think the E-mu Hammond emulator rack from the 90s would do the trick?
