Howdy!

Well alas, the time has come that my 10 year old PC has limped for far too long and I'm in need of an upgrade. I'm working on a song right now and adding all the plugins and my PC is feeling it. I can limp by probably for a few months, but a CPU + RAM + MoBo upgrade is quickly approaching.

I work with a bunch of gaming nerds and they found this deal for me and it works out since I live in Indianapolis, I can go pick up this deal.

https://www.microcenter.com/product/500 ... toreid=165

But, I am taking recommendations based off of people with a gaming lens. I'd be curious to poke your guy's brain on what you guys think would be some important specs to look at that maybe most gamers don't really think about. Or do y'all have any PC build suggestions?

Here's what I'm currently running if anyones curious.

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770S @ 3.10 GHz
Memory: DDR3 @ 16 GB

Gratzi!

The most important think now with musicproduction and high count of samples at low latencys are the thing with the DPC latency i would say from my experience, ( internal latency between the computer parts, especial for notebooks) and the thing with ram speeds and cas latencys.
At this point i can report, thinkpad T440p, HP Z BookG" and a Mac Book with 4000er i7 intel from 2014/15 compared, the HP is the weakest performer, with newer mobile devices since Intel 12th or AMD 4000 upwards, for example my tuxedo pulse ryzen 4800h without termal limitations has 750ns DPC latency in the test, a HP compared the same, but much much more problems with fan noise and heat, the Intel lacks when it comes to high GHZ all core of the intel heat problems.

So if your are interested look for used notebook Ryzen 4800H/5800H/6800H device with a good coling system,
with the newer machines i only know the have often DPC latencys over 1200ns, what´s still okayd, over 1500ns it becomes more and more frustrating.

I still recommend a musician friend to buy a huawei matebook with Ryzen5800h 3,8ghz all core power permanently ac powered.

Happy new year

I did this 2 years ago. I prefer Intel builds for music, so I upgraded from a very similar build to yours to a i5 12600k.

Considering Intel builds are IMHO stable for music but 13th and 14th gen are having some thermal issues in high workloads I'd still build something around a 12th gen i5 or i7. The i5 12600k surpasses your current build by more than 4x and if you go for a I7 12700k it's even better.

The 13th and 14th gen problems are supposedly solved if the motherboard is patched, and the performance of those chips (13600k would be IMHO more than enough) is crushing!

If you work complex projects, I'd stay away from laptops if you plan to have the rig static in a studio. I've had a hard time with my kids laptop to lower the dpc latency down on a hp laptop. Hideous. :/

Performance wise, I've got a 10th gen i5 and i7, and a Mac M1 (all with 16 GB of RAM and 1TB SSD). Performance is a non-issue nowadays. I spend most of my time making music on an Arm Cortex CPU with 2GB of RAM. CPU and RAM are rarely an issue (actually, it's never been an issue).

You might want a basic dedicated GPU as they're important with high-dpi displays (preferably one with its own dedicated RAM).

Otherwise, I'd focus on stable motherboards

I kept things simple and just bought a Dell G5 tower. It's built extremely well and is servicable.

Gratzi for responses.

Interesting that most of you go with intel...funny that my coworker was like "AVOID INTEL AT ALL COSTS!! AMD!!!!". But i know he's a huge gamer so I'm sure he has some valid reasons from a gaming mindset.

Well, I ended up not biting the bullet just yet and missed the deal. I got spunout when I thought about "Do I have to buy a new windows license too?" I have Windows 10 and was curious if you can transfer OS from my old MoBo to new...I gotta look into that. I think I can if I set up my Windows account via Microsoft?

I'm not going to purchase a laptop, this will def be a desktop. It's what I have now and what I've used all these years to mess with. I think i will continue to limp by and read up a bit more on all the technologies out there before purchasing. I do know in USA we have Presidents day in February, so I will just read up on everything until then to hopefully find some good deal during that time.

Interesting about DPC latency! I will have to read up on that!! Is there a method in order to pick parts to minimize DPC Latency?

Have a look at PcPartPicker.com and see what other people are building. Most of the builds are gaming oriented, but sometimes there's a video production and audio production build in there.
