Paying annually for updates feels just like a subscription...

The new licensing scheme is more like Bigwig's. I totally understand that there is a lot of resentment. I was also one of those who had peace of mind for two years with an upgrade sale (less than $90). But this is no longer a sustainable business. More and more DAW companies will switch to subscriptions. Sad, but true. Even Apple has switched Logic for the iPad to subscription.zumBeispiel wrote: ↑19 Sep 2024Paying annually for updates feels just like a subscription...

Honestly, I'm not sure what people want. $199 seems like a great price for a perpetual license for a great DAW as it is. And updates within the first year are free. As for future upgrades, I'd simply wait until there are enough added features to warrant the $150 upgrade price. How could I complain?
As for subscriptions, isn't the above the way it worked before subscriptions? So we have a choice.
If it's the old 'corporate greed' argument, maybe we're as greedy as the corporates.

Yes, if everything works well - no problem! But (contrived example) if they screw up a feature just before the end of your update cycle and offer a fix afterwards, then you're out of luck. And seasoned Studio One users know that Presonus likes to break things (Pro EQ) that actually worked. And then have to quickly push out a fix again.

I have several other DAWs including Live. Besides Reason, Studio One is the only one I ever open. It is good stuff. It is a musician's DAW.

Their pricing, model and idea of a feature releases throughout each year is very similar to what Reason did with v12 back 2021.
I guess RS was ahead of curve here.
Given the comments and dislikes, customers still don't seem to like it though.

It's all perceptual.
Mario 3 was £50 when it was released in the UK. Adjusting for inflation that's £111 in today's money.
Cubase VST/32 released for £649 in 2000 translates to £1,198 in today's money.
We have much more sophisticated tools with industry grade sounds and synths for much less.
