Some ages ago, I'm sure I posted something about sCrAmBlEd?HaCkZ!, which was ostensibly software designed to semi-recreate sounds using fragments of other sounds - demo video here. (I couldn't find my original thread on the subject, oh well.)
Now, almost by chance, I've heard that Aphex Twin and a programmer named Dave Griffiths have just released a program called Samplebrain, which by description seems to do about the same kind of thing. I haven't played with it yet as I write this, but I figured it was interesting enough of a concept to share.
