Smart phone volume boost

I am lucky in that sometimes at work I am able to listen to podcasts and whatever on my phone. The only issue I have is a bit of a lack of volume, sometimes it's hard to hear it enough. I have it upside down in my top shirt pocket so the speaker is facing up.

I have tried volume boosting apps. They never appeared to do anything and I was wondering if they are even capable of doing what they say.

I am just using a basic Samsung smartphone, does anybody have any ideas of an app that will work or maybe a media player that has a boostable volume or anything?

I'd like something similar but for the opposite reason. I want to reduce the level. Everything is so loud on headphones! I got it on the minimum setting and it is too much sometimes

Had that problem with an iPhone 6 ages ago. Took a pin and put a small hole in the mesh grill covering the speakers. Doubled the volume.

Kodi has a boost setting in the playback sound settings menu, as far as I remember.

My phone is waterproof and I wouldn't poke new holes in it.
