Just sold my Roland System 1 - WHAT SHOULD I BUY?

Want to talk about music hardware or software that doesn't include Reason?

Decided to part with my Roland System 1- I already own the System 8 and it just seemed sort of redundant. I'm looking for a replacement synth that has a similar physical footprint (studio storage issue). Any suggestions? I'm currently considering the Korg Minilogue XD.

Thanks! Yeah, that's awesome but I should have mentioned - I'm looking to keep my purchase under the $700 USD range (hence my Minilogue XD interest). But that Pro2 is a solid synth!

On a serious note, I have considered a Teenage Engineering OP-Z, but I'm looking for more of a traditional synth I think. I already have an MPC Live 2 and don't really need what the OP-Z offers.

Think you first need to decide mono or poly. Then maybe save up for something that stands out. On the mono side you have Korg MS20 full size and Pro3, both unique and awesome in their own right, also makes sense compared to all great VST it there.

For poly, maybe a Roland Zencore is what will be a good choice now considering the Zencore release plan, but you can of course just use the VST for that...

For a mono synth and similar price point, Minibrute 2 or 2s. For a digital synth similar price point, HydraSynth desktop version (to name just a few of the options). :)

The XD sounds fantastic.

That being said I did not like the interface so I passed mine on. Nothing wrong with the sound at all..... just did not like the keys or the feel of the knobs/interface.

There is also Deepmind 12D.

If your focus is hardware then eBay and reverb are your friends, but you knew that already. I did a quick look and, personally, there are no synths I would want for under $700, new or old, right now.
With the MPC and the option of sampling a synth like sample robot, I would get a mono synth, or start a modular system. I would sample the stuff everyday, and repatch for a new sonic adventure the next day.
Obviously I don't know how easy the auto sampling option is with the MPC Live.

Sounds like you want an analogue poly.

What about Deepmind 12 ? I think its quite possibly the most underrated poly out there right now. Most bang for buck.
Because of the standing place i had the deepmind6 in mind. But even the 6 is quite wider than the minilogue xd.

For Modular things there is the "Nifty Bundle" from Cre8audio. Together with some modules from dreadbox "chromatic line" you´ll get somewhere for 700 Bugs.

If it were me, I'd be looking at the Korg Wavestate. I don't have one but a friend of mine also with System 8 finds it a very complementary sound.

If you want a glorious analog sound and don't need another keyboard, Moog Sirin.

I would stick with Minilogue XD, it's analog (plus digital).
There is also the module version
It's nice to have Roland and Korg sound and to have an analog next to the System-8
If you don't mind 4 voice synth.
It can sound much warmer than most demo's make it.
It can do mono, poly and chords. It has good fx. I will buy it next year.
The other option is a Prologue 8 used.

BTW this guy plays classic sounds on the Minilogue (not XD)

Minilogue is easily the coolest little synth I have ever seen or heard.

Some great suggestions in there - I totally forgot about the new Korg Wavestate! And a used Ultranova might be an option, too (though I'm not a fan of how that synth looks). Man, just when I thought the XD was a sure thing, I've got some more research to do.

Thanks for all of the input everyone!

Although it sounds like you wont go down that route, here is a video about what i was mentioning. A bit little less than 800 bugs will give you what you see...

Although it might be that the guy in the vid has more cables than in the package... lets go to a amount of around 800 Bugs and add them.

Hi Enoch, you having a MPc does not mean it does everything op-z do. Op-z can be a genius sequencer for your mpc too. I, as you already know, am an MPHead myself, but the op-z is just another different thing...I must say I have it since may and am in love with the little thingy.

The Polyend/Dreadbox Medusa (in its new, minimalist livery) is currently the same price as the Wavestate. Obviously a very different kind of instrument from the Roland you're replacing or either of the Korgs, but might be a really good complement!

I hear you. I think part of my reluctance is that I’ve never been a fan of Teenage Engineering’s workflow on any of their devices (yet). I sold all of my Pocket Operators for that reason, and the video animation stuff that the OP-Z does via an iOS device just seems gimmicky to me.

I’m not saying it’s a bad device; it just may not be for me.

Hmmmm.. this looks interesting - thanks! I’m giving the Loopop demo a watch this morning.

I’ve decided the Wavestate isn’t for me. While its execution is just brilliant, I find the sounds not to my liking. I’d still lean towards the XD given the choice. But the Medusa is really intriguing!

I was just thinking about why there isn't a Prologue module. Does anybody know if that's planned? It must be right?

It's interesting they have a module for the XD, which just removes a mini keybed and saves $100. So not too much space saving or huge difference in cost. But the Prologue, that's 49/61 full-sized keys. I imagine a module of that would save space and more money.

Don't think so. Great idea though. 16 voices.... Prologue/XD sound for what $7-800 US ? I'd buy it.
