Your PC config 2019 reason proof

hey guy, good new year !

ok my pc is ok, but i see for my next pc (not an urgency)

No vst only Reason RaX and RE

little for audio trax ( mastering and edit but never a problem with my hard disk or my ram)

my important target is CPU (i hate tracks bouncing and co)

ideas?

Wait for new AMD Ryzen/Epyc CPUs to come to market. Even if those possibly fail to perform very well for DAW stuff they might still put pressure on Intel to lower their prices.

yes, good strategy, i have time ( i read on i7 vs i5 and i see i7 is not always > i5) you have an opinion on this?

Intel use :
Product line | Generation | SKU Number | Suffix | ....to name their processors
i3/i5/i7/i9 | | 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9 | 100-900 | K/X/T/ etc.
Working back to front but...
K Means it's unlocked so you can overclock it, if you have no reason not to, this is processor to go for, but your might have other reason, such as heat or running costs that might mean you don't want an overclockable processor.

SKU Numbers
Big numbers are better, obviously.
Generation Number
We're on gen 9 at time of posting, I have a gen 7, it's lovely.
Product line.*
i3 = single core processors made of cheese
i5 = multicore processors made of slightly tougher cheese
i7 = not as cheesy, usually at least quad core
i9 = for supergeeks. (only recent gens)

* Product line is made up almost arbitrarily according to how intel can best sell them.

but as far as which one you should buy - get the best one you can justify for your budget.

I'm fine with AMD only rigs. Newest machine is 4 years old AMD rig.

Do you get any of the slowdown/processing audio problems that people have mentioned in other threads? Or maybe I should ask can you notice it? Does any of it affect your music making?
I was quite ready to build a SFF Ryzen PC then people started saying that AMD can't process audio well and I stalled.

I went from an i7-3930k to an i7-9700k a month ago. I waited 7 years to build a new system. Why wait longer if you need it and can afford it? The new HEDT Intel and AMD chips are just wonderful. But the next ones are going to be even better and more expensive I am sure. A 50% overall performance improvement and the entire system cost about 40% less than the i7-3930 I built in 2011. Some folks seem to be getting along just fine on 5 year old 4 cores and some are complaining about maxing out the latest and greatest 8+ core. I don't there is anything Reason proof if you are so inclined. I would always recommend a mid tower desktop workstation at least, for flexibilty and future improvements, unless that is not an option. The latest top HEDT CPUs will always outperform any laptop CPUs.

the price its too a question, my i7 (idk for the generation) is out on the end of my projects i check 25% more powerfull and im ok, :) (but more is better, only the price can lock me

i see too for a mobile pc for serato and little for reason

I'm really in no hurry, I'm just starting to date, to follow the evolution of the need for power of my software

I specify, that level Disk / ram I never had "worries", like all the time, if I can accelerate the loading times I take, but it's comfort

my main goal is the computing power

my i7 galere at the end of the project, with 25% more power and I would be "comfort", for now ...

I wanted to know the opinion of specialist, concerning the "complete" construction of a tower today
to know if in 2019, we get a lot more power for a comparable price see cheaper

I was a little "bleed" at the time, and I'm always happy with the investment, my pc serves me at all
(not only music)

my win10 is quite optimized and my config never failed me, just slowdown at the end of the project

NB: I do not like working on classic audio tracks (bounce etc ...) I prefer to keep my plugin
NB2: my ssd system is "too small" today it takes windows and my soft, would be that a judicious system, with 3/4 disk (1System 2software 3data 3 and / or 4 backup)

I think Intel & AMD make new chips & stuff every 6 months if not mistaken.
Some hardware is probably technology that is maybe 5-15 years in the future in terms of standard.

Prolly could spend 2500$ on a 15 year build at this very moment.

These are not car tyres that have to be changed twice a year?

i7 6th generation or above HQ HK or X processor

I will attest to this... my 4/5 year old 5820K machine is still kicking ass. Been running a steady 4.5ghz since forever, and it's been on for most of that time... thing chews up everything I throw at it...

Curious where you heard this. I'm guessing from people who happen to have AMD CPU's but also crappy audio interfaces.

I've been running nothing but AMD's in my rigs for the last oh couple decades or so and I've never had an issue. My last AMD rig was running XP and I used it for 24/96 audio, HD video and graphic design on a near daily basis for TEN YEARS without an issue. I only retired that beast when I upgraded to a newer version of Reason that wasn't supported on XP. I even upgraded the CPU on that thing from a dual core to quad core on the same motherboard without any problems whatsoever.

Now I'm running an 8 core AMD rig with Win 7 and, again, no issues whatsoever.

I'm fairly confident any audio issues you've heard rumors of were attributable to the user's misconfigured PC or their lousy audio interface.

I will say, however, that I had previously bought a Focusrite 18i20 for my new rig and it just couldn't hang. Low latency introduced clicks/pops/annoying bullshit so I went with a "lower end" interface and all those problems magically went away. I assume either the 18i20 sucks ass in real world (despite looking very sexy in person/on paper), or there was some conflict between it and my chipset.

As always with computers, there's too many variables to say anything conclusively without significant lab testing under very controlled situations.

It's gonna be fine, for a laptop.
I'd not use a laptop for my primary rig. Laptops are always a compromise because they have to manage heat a lot more closely than desktops. Thermal throttling can cause a serious drop in performance. Having said that, if you really want a laptop this processor should cope with most things you throw at it.

That's quite possible.

It's been covered a few times on the CPU thread somewhere on this forum, but I don't have first hand experience, as I said. I think I shall just have to build and see.

I don't think you specified your price range in this thread yet, but I recently scored this config for ~$1100 USD around the holidays and have been very happy with the performance so far. I typically refresh my music production PC every 3-4 years. It's my only music machine now (no more tower), using multiple DAWs (Reason, Sonar, Ableton) and interfaces (UAD, Roland) and I downsized all my outboard gear and converted into a portable 16U case.
