Hey folks,

after some real bad experiences the last months with my PC Setup i want to know yours. Could you help me out? At the moment I'm running 9.5 with VSTs from 10 to 40 Tracks.

The system that sucked since march was: Xeon E5-1650 V2, 16 GB Ram, Windows 7 Pro, Reason 9.5, Focusrite 18i20 Interface. Had a looot of troubles with it, finally I'm done whit that setup and looking for something more stable. Of course, future plans are an update to 10.1 (or 11 if released)

Thanks for your advices!!!

Jan

What do you mean by "stable"? What were the bad experiences you had? If the performance of the Xeon E5-1650 V2 didn't cut it for you, there is better options of course, but it's still not that bad!

Your specs look great.

On paper, the Focusrite 18i20 also looks great but I had shit performance out of one brand new one and one used one before I decided to switch. Tried a few and landed on the M-Audio M-Track Eight and haven't had any performance issues since.

I'm in IT and was very thorough in my testing of the 18i20s that I owned. Tried the latest drivers, previous drivers, had the shipped firmware and updated the firmware to no avail. It's been a while so I can't recall the exact specifics as far as latency and clicks and pops. But when I installed the M-Track Eight, I had no further configuration to do, it just worked.

I was frustrated and annoyed to all hell with the performance I was experiencing with what should have been an awesome interface. My PC was a brand new build, fully optimized for audio production. I was/am also using Win 7, FWIW.

Try a different interface before you go and get a different computer as the interface might be the only issue. Maybe the 18i20 just doesn't like certain configurations under Win7?

I run an i5 6600k oc'd @ 4.5 GHz with 16GB ram and love it. its very powerful. havent even made it flinch. I ran as many clients to see how many it takes to bog it down and its around 6 songs, filled up with stuff running where it starts to tell me i dont have enough cpu.

Hey Jan,

As it all depends on the type and number of instruments and effects you use, I can tell you that using racks extensions and vst, sometimes also those less optimized, on the oc i7 7820x and 16gb ram, I sometimes have problems at 30-60 tracks in the song. Motu track16 sound card. And if my memory is not wrong, my processor is the strongest (over 20,000 points in the passmark) of all i7, only i9 or xeon are stronger. And on the LGA2066 You can always go simply higher with i9 cpu.

I bought a new pc with a pentium i5 3GHz and 8GB DDR4 RAM. Struggles sometimes with maybe 10 tracks plus fx even though optimized for audio.

The biggest performance push with a 2018 cpu you get with the fastest ram, is my experience. The performance difference with my 2017 Ryzen 1700 3,7Ghz beetween, DDR4 2666 vs. 2933Mhz was 8seconds for the complex Reason Benchmark (17sec vs. 25sec) The comparison chart with DAW Bench offers, the Intel 8700k is sometimes a little bit faster than the newest Ryzen2700x, but i don´t know how Ryzen12nm performs in the next months against the intel i7 9700k 8core design at LGA1151v2. Hypetrheading isn´t usefull this time as requested my experience ,cause it doesn´t increase performance....
