If you follow the thread it wasn't supposed to be, but we are tribal creatures in nature, and our Shaman is called Gates, or Jobs
Yea, the video in question has nothing to do with most of this discussion - it's more about breaking the warranty and still wanting it to be honored…as far as I can tell.
Sure.

Apple built the mac for almost the opposite reasons windows exist. A sandboxed environment that would most likely not be used for much outside of work, browsing and maybe if the guy using it was attached to Logic or Garageband. Is it doing something right? Stick to it then.

Ha, Mac vs PC. I'll play.

I used to be a windows guy, but now I have 8 Macs in my house and I use them all. The one dinky windows laptop I got for free is on the floor in my basement and I only use it when I need to open a spreadsheet. I tried opening spreadsheets on a Mac, but it didn't feel right and I didn't want to turn my Mac into a computer an accountant uses. When it comes to everyday fun computing and specifically music making, I'm Apple for LIFE. Gonna get a new fancy iMac later this year. They're so sleeeeeek. I love the OS's gui. Logic is the best thing ever, Reason #2, and they both run fantastically on my Macs. Also, this is little thing to most but a huge thing for me - OPENEMU is only possible on a Mac - windows has shitty alternatives. Windows is good for you though if you're an accountant who uses FRUITY LOOPS or Cakewalk by Bandlab, lol.

Ah, as an IT guy, I can't resist a good Mac vs PC debate.

As I said, I'm in IT. I've worked on just about everything. I used to own a macbook and even an apple server. *Used to*.

I can attest to the fact that if you are technical and get under the hood, you're going to run into just as many stupid annoying issues/hassles on a mac as a PC. They're not immune to installation errors and other nonsensical problems. Not in the slightest. I even dual booted my macbook with windows. That was fun.

The macbook I owned was damn near exactly the same specs as my Lenovo but the Lenovo ran circles around it. It did everything faster. Photoshop, lightroom, etc. And the Lenovo had a tablet screen with a stylus. Additionally, the macbook had such a horrendously glossy screen, that you had to work in near pitch black to see any finer details in photos or graphic design. Which I thought was odd, since most artsy types love to talk about how great Macs are for artsy stuff. It's kind of difficult to edit photos or do graphic design when you're trying to look through a mirror.

I can appreciate a finely designed machine. I don't dislike Mac laptops. But I expect too much from my equipment. And I can custom build a better machine for far less money all day long.

I agree w/the Conclusions.
Cost of First Dibs sometimes. Most times, it does work out.
I hope this heat gets things moving on iMac Pro Service.

I had a friend in high school who’s older brother put a Chevy engine in his Porsche 911. TOTALLY rocked! I would only need such a custom build if a) I had built it myself and had the tools and knowhow to fix it when it breaks down and b) if I actually needed that level of power.

Most of us are travelers who need to get from point A to point B, and don’t have the time or skill set to build our own custom vehicle, no matter how well it outperforms what we can get at our local car dealer.

That’s how I choose my vehicles, and that’s how I choose all of my tools! But I can totally appreciate those who have the skills to ‘roll their own’, whether it be a vehicle or a computer! :)

this is a terrible analogy. as a car guy AND a computer guy, i assure you a custom car is 500x more difficult to build and tune then a custom computer. it's like comparing a lego set to a 5-course michelin star meal.

computers are SO easy to figure out. give yourself a weekend and some google people. stop acting like knowing about computers is some kind of difficult knowledge to posses.

and to address the linus tech tips video; the most ridiculous thing about it is that he WANTS to PAY for it. it's not like he's demanding anything, he just wants to fix his work PC at ANY COST and apple is declining to help. it's an egregious mark against apple in the right-to-repair debate that has been waging for several years in the IT world

he'll fix it at any cost ? really??? then the genius should buy a new one.
... egregious....? a lil melodramatic

Several years? Try 2. Or, link at article from 2014, pls?
Exaggerate much? The Right to repair debate is also ABOUT cars...
but, Nice one. 'Computahs are ez to fig'rrr out.'

It's a work PC genius. If it had important files for your livelihood on it, I'll bet you'd want to retrieve them too.

My first computer. The iMac Pro. And, my 'livelihood' files are on there....

yeah... I guess I'd want to retrieve it...
But, you dont really think that's the context here, do you... ?
You're ... smart.

And, my name aint Genius, it's -

linus is not anti-apple (full disclosure: I am). linus has always kept a level-headed balance to his preferences of one platform over the other. his channel was founded on building windows pcs so i guess you can read into that all you want, but you can't exactly legally build your own macs. he used an iphone for multiple generations (i believe up until the iphone 8 came out) and triumphed its usability. this is not a hit on apple users, it's a legitimate customer service complaint. linus just happens to have 5 million subscribers

Linus said he's making a followup video on the Apple "service". I shall update the thread when available . Have a sweet, lovely and delicious day everyone.

Peace and free lollipops for all on Earth.

p.s: pineapple on a pizza is delicious and perfectly acceptable culturally.

Come to think of it I don't know macs at all. Question I got are:
Do macs run on AMD?
Can you build macs?
Can you use a different mobo or repair it yourself if you use a mac?
All these I do not know, when it comes to macs.

I don't mind pineapple on pizza. I actually like it. But I only eat it if its there. I just don't order it.

I'm still confused by the whole thing and why it's a big deal. Linus has a YouTube channel to make money. That's ok. I assume he took apart the iMac Pro for another video to show people the insides to get views? Now he's creating more videos and getting tons more views to make complaints and create buzz about the customer service related to his very specific mistake. As a YouTube channel and 'content creator' I can't imagine he's all that upset. He's got his content and views. "Thanks, Apple!" People have channels where they drop computers and electronics from buildings and cut them in half with a sawzall. That's a quicker way to see what is inside and probably gets more views. That's what he should do with his iMac Pro.

short answer is no. apple computers require apple parts, which can only be bought by authorized apple dealers. in this case linus is being refused the parts he needs, as well as being refused any service, for any price.

Ah. That is a concept I have not thought about till I saw this thread.
Only thing I would suggest then is he just give them the whole machine to fix or just switch, or get a newer apple thing.
