Hello folks, my first post in this lovely forum
I am planing to built a powerful PC but i am not sure how Reason is utilizing CPU cores
I knew that Reason was using in a 4-core/8 threads system the 3 of the threads (the 3 cores basically)
but now after some updates (v9.5) i see that it uses all the 8 threads in my 4-core (i7 - 3770k)
AMD Threadripper 1950X has 16 cores/32 threads, will Reason be able to use all these threads or it has a limit?
If there is someone here with a Threadripper CPU i will appreciate much a review!
Intel's new line of CPUs are very expensive and the x299 motherboards are rumored to have some VRM heat issues.
Most likely Intel will do better the job because software developers are programming in Intel based systems, but what if the AMD
offers a good solution?
Is AMD Threadripper worth it or go to Intel?
I would also like to know this. Wouldnt it be nice if Reason was one of the standard apps for performance testing CPUs ?

I would point out the following for those like me addicted to high core counts. It takes a bit of time to talk to those extra cores which gives more latency. So clock speed is very important.
Some of the very high core count CPUs have a lower base clock speed. This presumably is because of all the cores squeezed into a small box generating heat.
Most of the activities on your PC still take place on a single core. Therefore a higher single core speed is more likely to benefit you than a couple of extra cores and the core balancing and CPU speed algorithms don't necessarily favour real time music production.
Example. The 18 Core i9-7980XE will run at 2.6Ghz and boost to 4.6Ghz if only two cores are used.
The 10 Core i9-7900X will run at 3.3Ghz and boost to 4.5 Ghz if only two cores are used.
Without any testing you can't tell but my guess would be general legacy computing applications like Reason will perform better on the 10 core than the 18 core. I really want one of those 18 core CPUs though.

I am spec-ing now. Possibly a bad time, with i9 launching this month. I see some i7 7000 series prices fell £100 in the past 3 weeks. I am leaning used XEON v3 or v4...Ryzen isn't in my spec-ing, I have been looking at it...but.... Not convinced...
I have been watching faster clock speed XEONs rising in price on ebay, and disappearing fast, too.
I read i9 senses the fastest cores within the cluster a does the heavy lifting on the fastest cores with the others for support. Clearly software has to be optimised for multi core.

Well, Coffee Lake is about to open for business...let's see what happens there. Aeox's screen shots and advice and power to price ratio is pointing to a Dual v2 Xeon system. I am planning to go v3/v4 in my specs. I m leaning weaker v3 or v4 for now and upgrade CPUs when the prices drop.
I'd love to hear tales of Ryzen experiences if anyone's got em.
Good luck, Dimitris

Tomorrow we'll see reviews for the new 6 core i7 8700k. I think that'll be a serious option as well for many people .

Hmmmm... Looks like AMD has Intel off balance at the mo. this Coffee Lake launch might be today, yet apparently the chips aren't actually available en mass until mid December or Jan2018. Such a situation might push needy upgraders to go AMD. Personally, I gotta have a new machine by the end of this month.

edit 1600 CET:
uh, SNAP, prices rising
i7-7820x was £490 yesterday...now it's up to £510
used XEON v4 and v3 ebay prices are all over the shop
(I used to afraid of ebay until I bought a 20 year old midi footcontroller a few weeks ago and it is MINT! I think that FC had been in the bag since it was delivered to the Netherlands circa 2000)
XEON v2 looks the best bang for buck like Aeox's suggested vendor looking hard to beat for vfm

I was about to purchase a Natex 2680v2 128GB, but I would prefer to go v3/v4. I put the 2680 workstation in my cart to get an idea of shipping to France and it ball-parked $500, so I cleared my cart. Then Natex sent me an email about shipping which actually turned out to be $150 Point being, Coffee Lake launch was a nice PR idea, but there are no chips to mount in the 370 boards. 45% increase sounds great...but if you can't buy it, those who need right now are maybe going to go AMD.
