I got a freak accident today with a sharp knife stuck in a holster. When it abruptly came out, it sliced through my right ring finger and pinky. Three tendons and four nerve paths cut. I've been in surgery for about two hours. The surgeon told me afterward that I have to set my expectations to not getting back full dexterity, probably far from that. It's my f-ing solo hand

I've been playing keyboards for over 40 years, and now I maybe will not be able to play again. I'm crushed right now
Oh shit man... That freaking sucks.

Got scared even by reading this. I believe, you will find many ways to be happy and share your music with world. But now it's just a period to get over.
I wish you the strength to endure this time. All the best to you!

Sorry man.. that's horrible.. I will say I have a friend that had to have some surgery on this hand for carpal tunnel a few months back and he's just now getting his strength back.. things like this typically require just working on your hand and finger strength.. I'd image once you are healed enough to try but the piano/keyboard Maybe a good way to rehab..

Oh man, that doesn’t sound good at all….

I wish you a good recovery, as good as possible!

It happens in a second, and you feel right away that it will have consequences.

Been there done it, still suffer from headaches for 41 years after a heavy bicycle accident. Did not wear a helmet then, which I still regret.

Take time to recover, and do it as good as you can!

Best wishes!!!
Greetings from Miyaru.

Thanks again everyone again so far for the nice words

I just returned from the intake session for the revalidation. They also removed the bandages, so this was the first time I saw my hand since surgery. The surgeon told me before that he might had to open the karpal zone in my hand to reach for the cut tendons. Fortunately, as it now appeared that wasn't needed. I also have basically no pain, just a numb feeling. But feeling nevertheless. I also have to start with exercises already.

From here just taking it one day at a time :puf_bigsmile:

Sorry this happened to you. Remember, as you said in the title of the thread, it's a curveball not a strikeout.

Exactly how I see it

That's why I was joking about it in the other topic :puf_wink:

Your joke in the other topic sent me to this thread, as I hadn't yet read it.

You mentioned starting exercises already. Just make sure you follow the doc's exact advice on that, especially in the early stages of mending. It's easy to do permanent damage by doing too much too soon. I've got a friend who still limps 30 years on from a bike accident because he pushed himself too hard in the early stages of recovery. I still remember the pain on his face as he forced himself to stand and walk when he had been told to do absolutely nothing for some weeks.

There is only one objective: making sure I recover as good as possible. That means I will do exactly what they tell me to do, nothing less and nothing more

tnx mimi

Small update: Yesterday the stitches were removed. Everything looks pretty good so far, and they said that the flexibility of my joints is above expectations so far. I was also told that the tendons will be at normal strength in about ten weeks from now, which is much faster than I was hoping for. So by then I can start finger exercises on my piano to try to get my dexterity back, and it should help with further recovery. All in all, things are going well as it seems :puf_bigsmile:

Good news. It was heartbreaking thinking you may not play again. I know what playing means to me and I believe many of us here are kindred. Keep in mind that dexterity may take more time than strength. But you learned to play once you can teach them old dogs the same tricks. Good luck with your recovery. I hope it is easy and complete.

Another small update. From today on, I don't have to wear the splint during the day, and I'm actually required to do light work/movements with my hand, to remobilize my tendons and muscles. I never expected how much you lose with your wrist and hand immobilized for just six weeks. Moving my wrist hurts like hell right now, but I'm as happy as can be, to lose the splint and start working on the actual recovery. Onward and up :puf_bigsmile:
