If you had $2,000 to make your final ever gear/SW purchases, ... what would they be?
Was suffering from a terrible case of GAS today, and had to ask myself - what would I buy if this had to be my last gear purchase?
We can assume nothing will ever break (and will be replaced for free if lost).
What would you get with your last $2,000 to spend on gear/software?

It's not about what to buy, its about the fact that the features you want aren't available when you need them.
For example, i need one of the two things right now, either the ability to load Midi vsts and instruments on the same track in Ableton or the ability to load midi vsts as players inside Reason Rack Plugin.
But it's just not available.
So yeah, it's not about money.
Of course who wouldn't want an amazing studio with all the bells n whistles...but then 2000$ is not enough for that.

Reaper does this. Still, I like Reason more (after using Reaper exclusively for over a decade).
-------
Analog tape ⇒ ESQ1 sequencer board ⇒ Atari/Steinberg Pro24 ⇒ Atari/Cubase ⇒ Cakewalk Sonar ⇒ Orion Pro/Platinum ⇒ Reaper ⇒ Reason DAW.

2k is is just not enough for the monitors I want...
Yeah, I'm aware reaper can do this, I've heard bitwig can do this too and a few others...but DAW wise I'm pretty much set with Ableton and for instruments fx etc RRP.crimsonwarlock wrote: ↑15 Dec 2022Reaper does this. Still, I like Reason more (after using Reaper exclusively for over a decade).
I'm just hoping they will provide this feature.
It just helps declutter the project, one instrument one track you know...right now i create one track for the midi notes, one for the midi arp, which sends data to an RRP instrument in another track.
So basically 3 tracks per instrument. It gets cluttered quickly as you add more sounds.

2 grand isn’t going to get much! But If I had it spare right now I would buy a cheap Clavinova style piano and a copy of Dorico pro for notation.

My RE wishlist would eat up about half of that budget. For the other half, I would probably grab an electric guitar and a bass, although I've been holding off to go that direction for years now
I think that would require a complete rewrite of the software. It is basically how they decided to implement this in the first place. I seem to remember that Cubase had a similar setup, with a MIDI-track routing into a virtual instrument that routed into an audio track. In Reaper, there is only one kind of track that can hold audio, midi, video, even images iirc. It has been like this from the start, being an integral part of the architecture of the software. I don't think base architecture like this is easy to change.visheshl wrote: ↑15 Dec 2022I'm just hoping they will provide this feature.

I still think that having all the signal routing (both MIDI/control and audio) outside the recording part (i.e., the main sequencer), like they implemented the cable system in Reason, is one of the most elegant solutions.

I agree with you here(for once )crimsonwarlock wrote: ↑15 Dec 2022My RE wishlist would eat up about half of that budget. For the other half, I would probably grab an electric guitar and a bass, although I've been holding off to go that direction for years now

But i think Ableton and reason need to provide this.
Look there have been many times they've had to rethink and redo their code because certain features were important and the people on the forums wanted them.
For example reason never had audio recording built in, but people demanded it, so they had to do it, reason never had vst support, but people demanded it so they had to build it...you know...vst support must've made things very difficult for props, but they did it didn't they... similarly i think that midi vsts as players is a good idea both in standalone and RRP.
I think they should implement it.
Anyway, this thread is about what would you buy fir 2000$...let's keep it on topic...we can talk in DMs about the midi vst thing

I'd probably get the Behringer X32 Compact or a new cutting edge PC.
AE Modular stuff, I spent 600 eur on this setup... it's incredibly well crafted, and cheap...
They even have Ornament and crime at half the price of Eurorack, but it has a waiting list very long,
bc of chip shortages... but waiting paid its price... I love my first AE modular, it sounds incredibly well!
Aside AE, I would still think about an Elektron, if I'd need some good drums,
and maybe a Moog Odyssey Space, If I could find one at that price...

maybe... 200 instances of Thor?
Laptop(and headphones) + Reason + Midi keyboard!
$2000 is a tricky amount. Not enough to do anything really fancy, so I guess I'd blow it on premium software. Probably get all the u-He synths, maybe some Fabfilter or Softube stuff. Just really sold workhorse plugins that sound great & would stand the test of time
Probably just a really top spec desktop pc to finally be able to write songs without worrying about cpu usage. Current pc is really quite old so it's always, a game of freezing tracks, flattening to audio etc to not run out of cpu.
To be fair reason is good cpu wise but once I have a few instances of serum/pigments etc my pc hates me.

I actually had £2000 and bought a really expensive guitar and a whole load of pedals. Magic
...No wait I must've had more because the guitar was €2400.
"Come, let's mix where Rockefeller's walk with sticks
Or umbrellas in their mitts
Puttin' on the Ritz"

That's easy, $2000 worth of picks, strings, heads, sticks, and tubes.
