Agree about the “time to adapt” part. But steampunk is a science fiction sub-genre, not an actual era, right? ;)

No matter how many decades I used English, I still don't know every definition. I meant the era when steam-based machines became a thing. : )

Arcane animated tv show. I love the look and the steam punk vibe. Well done.

And here we are..is this the end of DAWs and video? :problem:
Or just more junk noise and visuals :-?

I don't think so!
I mean, I have access to so much better music than my own, on Spotify, but I still make music.
Nothing has changed for me.

That said, Suno is absolutely amazing.
I guess very soon ppl will have their personal playlists with their own AI generated songs. sharing with each other like ppl are sharing photos on instagram.

I had to try Suno, came up with this Bluegrass song.
Just slightly modified in Reason & mastered through the AI mastering service at emastered.com

My thoughts exactly.

Once we reach a point where AI is unquestionably vastly superior to humans, we will still seek out human artists in the same way we still value photorealistic art despite vastly superior cameras ;)

It's no different to the introduction of jukeboxes. Sure, we now can play music from the greatest bands from any time period (except the future, of course, ... although I'm sure AI will do its best ;) ), but you still see people turning up to see bands and artists perform live (even when their performances are known to be shoddy).

This is also a game-changer for sampling.

Imagine beatmakers having practically free access to unique Motown-grade recordings, but also the ability to orchestrate AI bands to create a desired style.

I think the musician will be able to take an idea and carry it out in minutes.
For example, sing into a computer microphone and the voice will sound like it was recorded on the best microphone in a professional studio.
Make a beat-box using the mouth and say, turn it into Led Zeppelin drums or whatever.
Pick up an unplugged electric guitar, play a riff into the computer's microphone and say, pantera style.
Then make a ping-pong of ideas with the AI and shape the music until it sounds satisfactory, all within minutes. What's missing in music today is this flow.
This will help create a certain distance between the artist and the work. Sometimes it takes so long to complete a project, and we get so immersed in it, that we start to think it's all rubbish. Ai will make things fresh.
Well...

We already have a deluge of good music that already exists.

AI will just create personalised samples for music makers to use.

The company Suno are almost ready to release 'continuation' which means a user can upload an unfinished track and AI will complete it for them and with that the amount of information needed will shrink until you throw a 2 bar loop at it and ask it to construct an entire track with breakdowns, rises, chorus, verse with the user being able to feed lyrics in which will be voiced perfect pitch in any voice you want.
What has happened to images and now video creation is happening to music. DAWs will be a thing of the past.

That's two things I'd like.
1. Something to do some of the donkey work in roughing out an arrangement. I often get bogged down when arranging and sometimes lose the enthusiasm for the track.
2. Something that can sing better then I can.

I’ve been actively hoping for this (and mentioned it briefly earlier in this thread) since I first heard about AI. The ability to create your own personal soundtrack for your life seems appealing for the way I often listen to music. I love listening actively of course, but passive listening without having a play list of songs I already know but somehow still fitting the mood would be amazing.

There are certain things I do where I like to have music going in the background but not necessarily music I already know. This is sometimes because I am doing something like programming or designing, and need “focus” music (like some use for studying, creative writing, etc). Of if I’m doing housework I just want something motivating with a strong beat. And if I’m driving I often want something relaxing but not TOO relaxing. Or if I’m stretching or relaxing before bed I want music that promotes that mood and energy.

I don’t expect it will be long before you tie your generative music to your biometrics for relaxing or a workout or studying/coding or for falling asleep. Same for a story telling AI that learns your tastes and generates “books on tape” to fit your mood or help you fall asleep etc. Lots of possibilities to do things no writer/composer could or would want to do.

Just like if we get self driving cars there will still be times when you WANT to drive, I would still listen to “human” music (I wonder want term we’ll come up with to clarify that?) even if I had the best AI generator out there. And for sure I’ll still make music, just like I’ll still drive my self driving car. Because it’s about the journey, not the destination! :)

Well, for a frame of reference, it's arguable to consider ai "art" as art. Is it art? or is it just a digital image that may, or may not look neat? Art is made by an artist. Art and music are both in the genre of the humanities. Once you take the humanity out of what it is, is it still art anymore? I mean, I hate to say it, but typing a line of text into ai and getting a full look-like painted masterpiece and being considered an artist, is similar to blowing out a candle and considering yourself a fireman. To that extent, is somebody that asks chatgpt to write out a novel for them an author? Where do you draw the line? Weird times are coming ahead.

As with ready-mades (found object) as an accepted modern art form I see the human element in this AI art in the selection (and possibly touch-up) step. Also having a machine spew out random AI art would be an art installation in itself (performance art).

In general art is art if you can make (some) people accept it as such.

Can one 'divorce' the evolution of art from the evolution of human technology?
Is coding art?
As far as we publicly know and maybe it already happened in labs around the world, AI is not a curious 'being'.
It can't be inspired from within to switch itself ON and start painting.
AI needs to be safe for everyone.
A true artist is always unsafe for the status quo.
A fake artist produces propaganda.

A Brief History of Color in Art

Artists invented the first pigments—a combination of soil, animal fat, burnt charcoal, and chalk—as early as 40,000 years ago, creating a basic palette of five colors: red, yellow, brown, black, and white. Since then, the history of color has been one of perpetual discovery, whether through exploration or scientific advancement. The invention of new pigments accompanied the developments of art history’s greatest movements—from the Renaissance to Impressionism—as artists experimented with colors never before seen in the history of painting.

Egyptian blue pigment history
Brave's AI summarizer:
Egyptian blue is the world's oldest known synthetic pigment that originated in Egypt over 5,000 years ago, around 3300 BCE. It was relatively inexpensive to produce and was traded throughout the Roman Empire as a less costly alternative to indigo, which was imported from India.
The invention of the process of manufacturing Egyptian blue during the first dynasties of ancient Egypt, beginning about 3100 B.C.E., was a consequence of other technical developments.
The Egyptians tried to use lapis lazuli, but their attempts repeatedly ended in a murky gray color caused by intrusive calcium and limestone. Instead, they found other minerals to create this wondrous color.
Egyptian blue was the first synthetic pigment and the most extensively used from the early dynasties in Egypt until the end of the Roman period in Europe. Many specimens, well over 3000 years old, appear to be little changed by the time.

I think already ai has had such an impact on digital art to the point of every time I see digital art now, I have to imagine it was probably just done with ai. It's devalued it considerably in my opinion. Don't even get me started on the ones trying to pass it off as the real thing, making prints...signing them and all. I've seen it. It seems very scammy to me and I don't like it. If people are honest about it, fine. Pretending to be doing something you aren't is upsetting at best. I imagine I'll feel similar about music soon. Seems like a pretty big risk for someone with an established career already though. I'd imagine it to be kind of like getting busted lip syncing.
