I am trying to create a little video by recording my screen with audio for one of my projects. I have a microphone and I used Quick Time Player / New Screen Recording option which doesn't really work: after about 4-5 minutes of recording, the video just stops (the audio continue), and when I tried to save it, there is a "corrupted" stream error message. I tried multiple times with the same result..
So I am wondering what to use to record my screen (or portion of it) with audio (coming from a microphone/sound card) on macOS...
Thanks
Yan

I use OBS, which is open source and free. I have my iMac's built-in mic coming in on Mic/Aux, and Reason coming in on Mic/Aux2 via SoundFlower. SoundFlower is kind of old now, but I'm using Mojave so it works just fine. Others here might have alternative suggestions for patching the output of Reason into OBS.

I installed Blackhole, instead od Sunflower, but it does the same thing.huggermugger wrote: ↑21 Jul 2022I use OBS (which is open source and free) to do the recording. Virtual audio channel, to add to aggregate device in Rsn and Qick time ext mic.
Qick time worked fine for me. Obs is not native M1, it might work too slow to
be reliant. Idk anyway the tuffest part is to get the virtual audio going..
both QT and OBS are good,
I've used ScreenFlow for years. Advantages: can record all sources separately including computer screen, video camera, external audio (mic), internal audio (Reason), and keyboard/mouse position (helps with editing tricks later on). There is no need for any audio routing add ons such as SoundFlower etc, it just WORKS.
Additionally, the editing is very well laid out. You can zoom in/out on sections, blur out background, draw circles/lines etc to draw attention, edit audio tracks separately from each other and from video, add additional sources such as screen grabs or animations, overlay text, show key commands used as they are typed, highlight the mouse/pointer with lightness or blur or remove the pointer completely, and so on.
IMO it's the separate recording tracks for each element and the advanced editing of the captures that take it well beyond the QuickTime and OBS solutions. You can demo it with the ONLY restriction being a watermark on export. This was another selling point for me, as once I experienced the workflow and flexibility I was unable to go back to the other options…

I have the latest ScreenFlow for my Mac mini M1 as well, and it works great for desktop audio but it's really hit and miss with Reason 12 or even Bitwig. You're supposed to set up "Telestream Audio Capture" as the audio device in Reason and so many times, it just doesn't record the audio. The audio track is just blank, so I've kind given up even trying.selig wrote: ↑22 Jul 2022I've used ScreenFlow for years. Selig if there's anything you know that I might be missing, please let me know., and thanks in advance.
I absolutely abhor having to go to my Windows PC and fire up OBS to try and screen record anything other than desktop audio.

I was able to successfully use OBS to record a 7+ minutes video. That being said, although my screen is 4k (and OBS recognizes it as such) the output is 1080p and I don't seem to find a way to change it... so the video is very blurry as a result. Are you able to record in high resolution?huggermugger wrote: ↑21 Jul 2022I use OBS, which is open source and free. I’ve never done that - I just select the interface I’m using for audio when setting up the recording. All available drivers are selectable as audio sources. For example, my Midas M32r has 32 channels and ALL 32 can be recorded separately (or I can select individual channels to be recorded). It’s amazingly capable in the audio department, allowing multiple sources of audio AND video to be recorded (record computer audio, external audio, computer screen, computer camera, external camera, etc).StephenHutchinson wrote: ↑22 Jul 2022I have the latest ScreenFlow for my Mac mini M1 as well, and it works great for desktop audio but it's really hit and miss with Reason 12 or even Bitwig. I’m on version 10 fwiw, but this multi-track capability has been in the app for at least a few versions now. It’s been very reliable for me, and very flexible as well (able to accommodate every curve ball I’ve thrown at it).
Happy to give more specifics if you’re interested…the recording part is only half the reason I use it, the editing/annotation etc seals the deal for me over OBS or QT solutions.

Thanks Selig for the information, much appreciated. I'll work it out and see what I can do.selig wrote: ↑23 Jul 2022I’ve never done that - I just select the interface I’m using for audio when setting up the recording.
