That book tore my mind open.
Have you read Foresters, Annie Prioux
Not as brutal, still
Quite brutal.
Recently read some of Terry Southern's articles on how film killed the novel.

Only for some.
I’ve been effected by far fewer films than I have books.
Plus you can listen to music while you read.
I think there’s more room with books and music for audience participation.
You have to do a lot more imagining.
Films try to do it all for you a lot of the time and just fail miserably.
I’m mostly interested in film sound. I find the vast majority of Films I see disappointing. Or I just give up half way through.

That book was a hell of a ride, eh Figg?
I’m certainly not advocating for film over music and lit. Not a movie guy. I remember reading something by Ford Maddox Ford about working with Joseph Conrad (they cowrote a novel), and he was going on about the novel (which was a new format, a new thing at the time) being the way forward.
Kind of blew my contemporary mind.

I’m working on 11/22/63 by Stephen King. I’m like a quarter of the way in but it’s intriguing so far.

Well, I finished Dune 1.
It was good. Conceptually amazing considering when it was written.
But I’m not sure I need to read all of them.
Someone pipe up if you can give a reason why I should. I’m open minded enough about it.

I liked how he weaved this subtle use of cosmic consciousness magic into it but w out getting hokey and new age about it.
Very well done.

Now I’m on to Use Of Weapons (wonder why...) by Banks. Suits the times I guess. And I still get a ride from it so what the hell.
But I could use some uncharted sci fi territory.

Anyone read the reality dysfunction yet? Worth it?

Lost down the rabbit hole of Jungian depth psychology. Marie-Louise von Franz and her interpretation of fairy tales is very fascinating.

Congrats! Herbert's Dune literally inspired so much "modern" sci-fi for the past 57 years - its themes are all over. Even Star Wars lifted themes (the Kessel "spice" mines; Tatooine as a desert planet; etc). It truly was ahead of its time and the world building is top notch. As for the follow up novels, personally I feel Dune Messiah (1969) and Children of Dune (1976) are absolutely worth it, as it elaborates more on Paul's journey and the dangers of the sort of religious power he exudes. Not to ruin it for you, but he basically goes down a path (well, at least his followers do) that doesn't make him the greatest person in the world, is all I'm saying! Lol As for God Emperor of Dune (1981), Heretics of Dune (1984), and Chapterhouse: Dune (1985), they're all good, but not as good as the first 3 IMHO.

As for what I'm reading, I picked up Clive Barker's Cabal (1988) for the second time (the first time was over 30 years ago). It's the novel that the film Nightbreed was based on, which is a B-stock horror film from 1990 that was far too ahead of its time for people to get. Lots of world building in that one as well.

My next read will be the entire series from The Expanse by James S. A. Corey (which is actually Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), because the television show that was based on them was some of the most intelligent writing and best sci-fi on television for the past 7 years, and I hear the books are absolutely stellar (no pun intended).

Techniques of coup d'etat. By Malaparte.
It was banned by Hitler and burned down, as of Mussolini and others because too critical...
Pretty hard reading, lots of names from 1900-1930, mostly from East Europe and U.R.S.S. (Ukraine, Poland, etc).

hello,

found this article on the yahoo today about joy division
(it was originally posted in 2021)

https://www.radiox.co.uk/artists/joy-di ... th%20after.

a very interesting read
the article also links to videos of the song

i'm trying to get youtube video / songs of covers of 'love will tear you apart' to add to the collection
and put one in each of the 6 movies

creating playlists for each movie is a lot of fun
really influences the mood / tone / pace / color of the scene

cheers,

j
