Looks like someone at Facebook tried to make some fire R12 beats on their lunch break 🤔🙈

A reckless action by some FB employees brought down the DNS and made Zuckerberg lose $7b.

Right after FB came back online, I saw a tweet that rang true:

Literally everybody outside FB wishes it would stay down and accepts that it should.

And yet.

makes one wonder how many people who use the word “literally” often actually know what it means.

Any word can be used in exaggeration, even one that means the opposite.

It does get overused in social media posts, but I think in this case it was meant to clarify that "everybody" wasn't hyperbole.

Here's the post-mortem: https://engineering.fb.com/2021/10/05/n ... e-details/

tl;dr: an admin f*cked up and the security net didn't catch this, thus the whole backbone network went down and took the DNS with it. Due to internal services depending on functioning DNS and additional physical access mitigations being in place, the backbone could not be brought back up easily.
