Great to write with hardware, then finish in the box. I love my hybrid setup. Then you can just do whatever. Today you feel like writing in the box? Do it. Tomorrow you're in the mood for a tactile experience? You got it.

Funny..What are the odds, that I'm the only one on this forum with zero outboard gear?

I literally, only have a laptop and a trackball....that's it.

Exactly. I just got bored of the mouse click routine. I wanted something tactile and immediate. So I bought an Elektron model cycles last year. It did set off my addictiveness and I got an mc-101, then... And... Then...

I've just finished my last cycle of buying and selling hopefully and have:
Elektron Digitone
Elektron Analog Four Mk1
Dreadbox Typhon
Korg Electribe 2 Sampler

Feels very powerful and immediate and with overbridge and a sampling option, easy to put songs together in Reason too.

And it's quelled any unease over what Reason Studios are doing. Reason 10, R11 Lite and Ableton Live Lite are all I need.

I've got you beat.
I don't enven have a track ball anymore.
Just a MacBook and a set of cans.

Don't know if a field recorder passes for outboard but there's that too.

No idea why I'm even on this thread actually!

I think its funny that he's decided to go DAWless, but asks himself "why?" every day.

From 2003 to 2013 I worked in the box only using my mouse and my trustworthy AKAI MPD26 controller. I was quite happy with that setup, maybe because it was all I knew. After purchasing my first synth, the Bass Station II I felt there is something special about turning knobs and pushing faders, quite apart from the sound of this analog beast. Since then I am a happy owner of Novation Peak, the OP-1 and an advanced hybrid modular system which are all sequenced by a Keystep Pro - and I still love working in the box. For my upcoming New Age album I have only been using the Bass Station II as external gear, maybe because I feel so comfortable with working in the box. I can get great results much faster, too.
I recognized that I have two different playgrounds at the moment. Reason as my DAW and the hardware setup. Both lead to totally different results. I am still learning a lot and there are days where I love just twiddling knobs and record it live. So best of both worlds IMO.
For me there is no hardware VS software. It's a question of your personal approach. And I mentioned the “analog sound” but that doesn’t mean that you can’t get wonderful hairy sounds out of plugins. Just look at the TAL synths, u-he stuff like Diva or Prophet 5. Really beautiful emulations for not too much money if don’t want to go down the hardware rabbit hole.

I agree with what the user above the user above me wrote.
I also agree with the sentiment of the user above me had about it.

Hardware is so much fun, and the daw is necessary to take all that fun and turn it into something finished.

I tried this for a year with an MPC3000 (with boosted RAM, 100MB zip + flashed bios) and a Triton LE (boosted RAM + SD -> flash reader).

I'd use the MPC as the sequencer.

It was fun. I felt much more connected and played things I wouldn't have in a DAW. But it was tedious bringing that with me to the studio each week.

After a year I caved in and went back to Reason.

The thing that drives me crazy about hardware is the power supply logistics. Every extra thing wants its own plug until there are tons of plugs and a million wires hooking everything up. I do like tactile knobs though. My current hybrid setup is great : Laptop, Beatstep Pro, Korg Nano mixer, Boss GT-1, Guitar. Soon to be complimented with Arduino powered midi foot switches.

One plug for the Laptop , One for the Boss.
