Hip hop or hip-hop, is a culture and art movement that was created by African Americans, Latino Americans and Caribbean Americans in the Bronx, New York City. The origin of the name is often disputed. It is also argued as to whether hip hop started in the South or West Bronx. While the term hip hop is often used to refer exclusively to hip hop music (including rap), hip hop is characterized by nine elements, of which only four are considered essential to understanding hip hop musically. Afrika Bambaataa of the hip hop collective Zulu Nation outlined these main pillars of hip hop culture, coining the terms: "rapping" (also called MCing or emceeing), a rhythmic vocal rhyming style (orality); DJing (and turntablism), which is making music with record players and DJ mixers (aural/sound and music creation); b-boying/b-girling/breakdancing (movement/dance); and graffiti. Other elements of hip hop subculture and arts movements beyond the main four are: hip hop culture and historical knowledge of the movement (intellectual/philosophical); beatboxing, a percussive vocal style; street entrepreneurship; hip hop language; and hip hop fashion and style, among others. The fifth element, although debated, is commonly considered either street knowledge, hip hop fashion, or beatboxing.

If they're not following, how did they manage to dig such a recognizable ditch in the musical landscape?

By getting busy fighting the so called "musical landscape".
By not forgetting, and let others rewriting the past.

I mean, how did it all form a well-defined musical style if they don't follow each other?

The genesis of Hip Hop is locked in the 80's, 90's. This is what I was trying to convey to the op.
A mouvement is well-defined only after it dies. This is why you have "Old school" hip hop/rap, etc. This is true for all the things invented and created by humans.
I believe you can only know you were part of a movement, by looking back. They did not have to follow anyone.

Maybe Hip Hop was born from a symbiosis of art, machines and misery.

As far as the music goes; all rap is hip hop but not hip hop is rap

I think the two descriptions as it is relevant today, kinda like how Indy Rock became not just a generic genre but also a style of sound, is that hip hop music seems to have a more boom-bap sound of 80s and 90s. So basic 16th note hi hats, snappy but gritty snare and gritty kick as the basics (contemporary productions today have also made a obvious point to clip your kick just a tad to ensure it punches through on ear buds. Imo, the hip hop sound isn't necessarily inline with the trends in rap music which is primarily 808, triplet patterns for hi hats and kicks, and open arrangement for emphasizing impact and big sounds ; ie the "trap" sound..

So basically, at least to me, the sounds of hip hop and production trends in rap are kinda different, musically anyway

hello,

i think hip hop is more about the message they were sending
more than the actual sound of the music
as time moved on
the lyrics became more aggressive / degenerate
the music sped up like the hi hats and snares due to down south trap
and now everyone pitches their 808s and calls it rap

i agree that original hip hop was a culture
and that culture had a message

rap and hip hop blend like salt and pepper

50 cent = rap
eminem = rap
dj honda = hip hop
krs 1 = hip hop
rakim = hip hop
nwa = rap

to me, hip hop is more positive
whereas rap is more angry

hip hop, to me, has a more lyrical rhythm to it
whereas rap is ...well you can count syllables in rap lines that match the tempo of the beat

hip hop is much more of a better relationship with the beat
whereas rap just...hey put on an instrumental and let me spit on top of it
there isn't as much communication

hip hop is like bbq music
rap is like let's go break some shit up

just my 50 cents worth

rap =
in da club
eminem
and jah rule's murder reigns
great song
nas, dmx
i never really got into biggie or jz
tupac, yeah, i'd call him a rapper but he had a message to deliver

black rob
nelly

but a lot of these artists have great r/b bbq songs as well

so to try to differentiate between the 2 genres makes for a great discussion

to call something hip hop is it more about the lyrics
to call something rap is it more about the music
or did hip hop just start to be called rap

have a blessed day,

When I hear the term rap, I think of the vocals. When I hear the term hip-hop, I think of the style and tradition that encompasses the whole genre. So there are entire albums of music that would be considered hip-hop because of the composition and production style which don't even feature any vocalists whatsoever. I wouldn't call these rap, since there's no rapper!
