Guitarist Carlos Alomar, who created the borrowed riff and was a co-writer on "Fame", was briefly in James Brown's band in the late 1960s.
I've known about these two tracks since the 1980s, and they come up again and again as an example of copyright vs non-copyright infringement.

It's 100% Carlos' riff, but he didn't play on the JB version as far as I know.
