You don’t have to do it like that

You don’t need to master your songs,
You don’t need to pan the vocals to the center,
You don’t need a lot of bottom end,
You don’t need to remove unwanted noise,
You don’t need to use the “best” compressor,
You don’t need to try to impress me,
You don’t need to use complex words, chords, et cetera,
You don’t need to use a classic guitar sound,
You don’t need to have great ears,
You don’t need to be very precise,
You don’t need to do it quickly,
You don’t need to use tube amps,
You don’t need to use analog synths,
You don’t need to use the latest and greatest equipment,
You don’t need to be the best musician of the universe,
You don’t need to have a lot of followers,
You don’t need to spend a lot of money,
You don’t have to do it like that at all,
but do whatever you’d like!

I don't agree with the sentiment because it blurs the line between art and craft. Art is just a creative activity that a monkey can do but craft requires skill which utilizes fine technique. Why not have both?

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with craft. But there are no rules, that's what I want to say.

There are no rules when art is in pure forum. Most people take on the craft too which does have rules. Then there's the saying about knowing the rules so you can break them like an artist but the acknowledgement of rules is still present.
I'd wager there are plenty of folks who aren't very familiar with some of the rules you listed. Can't break rules if you don't understand them.

I totally agree with that.

You don't need a MIDI controller,
You don't need monitors,
You don't need studio headphones...
You can get by just fine making art with laptop speakers; press F4 for on screen keys or draw notes in the sequencer which is even more artsy.

Then you may have confused things by posting a long list of what amounts to YOUR rules.
I "get" that there are no rules, but for me, sometimes I DO need the very things you say I don't need…and sometimes I don't. Make sense?
If there really are no rules, then IMO the only statement that's absolutely true is "there are no rules"
But you DID get a conversation going.

I think it's bi-polar. you can use the rules. and you can break them.
things go in waves. we need plus an minus. all the time.
it's all good if it's good for you.

Now so many people have chimed in here with their perspective, I would like to add mine too.
Sometimes I can get obsessed by one specific thing that seems so ever important. There was a time in my life, where I wanted all the cool plugins emulating classic analog gear, only to discover that those specific plugins didn't make me any better. I was lost in the belief that these plugins would magically give me that sound I was craving for, but didn't have the skills to achieve.
The way I understand your rules of non rules is that you have to be aware of old habits and those obsessions for specific gear, ways of working, believes and whatnot. Because, being aware gives you the ability to choose and base your decisions what a given song needs and not what your habits and obsessions dictate.

Anyone involving themselves in a DAW forum, it's fair to say, probably has a tendency to focus too much on detail. Bigger-picture/broad-strokes creativity perhaps comes less naturally.
Yeah, craft is a thing, but that's been my default mode of thinking since I was a kid. Playful thinking with the brakes off is the stuff I'm having to work at. Don't ever kick art by using "just" on it. Art is "just" a creativity that a monkey could do. Go on then. Write a banger that'll be stuck in people's heads all week, if it's so easy.
Do you grab the charcoal and fucking well make it serve the purpose your brain is bursting to achieve? Or do you join the charcoal forum and talk about the best charcoal?
"Just".
If the thought that there are people out there who'll make brilliant blazing art, with none of your technical knowledge... If that thought makes you feel negative things - makes you want to chuck "justs" at creativity - that's something you need to look at.

You don't have to breath.
You don't have to drink.
You don't have to pee.
...
You don't have to die?
You don't have to drink.
You don't have to pee.
...
You don't have to die?
Well, you should...
I'm not going to write a banger because I'm just an artist. I like to express myself and get lost in madness like an alcoholic vervet monkey with a stolen drink from a tourist. What kind of monkey do you relate to the most?
Nobody is saying that you can't make amazing art without technical knowledge. I for damn sure don't want to hear vocals panned to the left side though no matter how special somebody thinks they are. I think artists suffer severely from over-romanticization with the mystical aura of creativity. I understand the positivity in the original post but there are rules and guidelines even in the magical world of art.

art doesn't have a purpose. art doesn't want to tell us something.
it can though.
but it doesn't need it.
art just is.

This I totally agree with. Sharpening communication through art is the craft.Marco Raaphorst wrote: ↑12 Sep 2018art doesn't have a purpose. art doesn't want to tell us something.

There's a Paul Thomas Anderson interview, with Marc Maron, where he said something like "Inspiration will turn up, but you have to be sitting at your keyboard ready to meet it."
Also I came across an interview yesterday with Lisa Hanawalt, who draws BoJack Horseman:
"[...]you don’t really have to be good at something before you do it. You kind of just have to do it, and then you learn on the job."
I identify with whatever monkey sits still and thinks too much about detail and workings. Which is fine, I'm okay with that being me. But I'm trying to get better at the other side.
