When I was boy the notion of being able to see live video of the earth from a car drifting in space would have been proper science fiction fantasy.

Today I'm sitting at my PC watching it happen.

... While making a fat beat on Reason, a product 1/1000000th the cost of a recording studio from the 70s.

It's good to be and feel alive. :puf_wink:

Oh wow, I looked at the video and wondered why the earth was getting smaller. I didn't realize they didn't just put it into an earth orbit, they actually pushed it so that it will move beyond mars' orbit!

Sounds like they goofed and overshot Mars. That Tesla is headed toward the asteroid belt. The PR team is spinning it to say "look, we can even send shit to deep space!"

Heh, they gave themselves chances of 50% of this working at all. The main booster didn't land and maybe - or maybe not - they weren't able to turn off the in-space booster in time so they overshot mars. The point was made nonetheless. Maybe they DID just boost as far as they could get to see whats possible.

Exactly. They burned everything they had in the tank, mainly to get an idea of the fuel consumption rates on the transfer stage. Calculating delta v (how many m/s worth of fuel for a given mass) in a vacuum, including parameters like pressure tank, fuel temperature and so on, is extremely difficult. Turned out they had more delta v packed than calculated, but at least they have a pretty accurate reference now.

At first i saw this as a prank, a bit silly or egotistical. I now love it. I watch it a LOT. It gives me perspective and pure wonder.

When the car is in darkness are the random flashes on the lense cosmic rays? Anyone else noticed these? (Not talking about the stars or lense flares)

Also love how the stars go past at different rates... straight out of Star Trek...
