It started out as a joke, whenever someone asked 'what song is this?' people would jokingly answer 'Darude - Sandstorm.' This became so common that Darude - Sandstorm in its various uploads on Youtube ended up raking in multi millions of views and continue to do so. Then you see things like this, a documentary about this apparent super popular song that is not actually that popular at all, all this is born out of a joke. Great song, no doubt, but there is also this other side to its popularity all these years later.

My brain can't process this!

Are you hating on Darude - Sandstorm? The Holy Grail??? :o

I'd like to think that most folks are hip to the situation and Darude even mentioned in the video basically he doesn't care if people take his track lightly or make fun of it. :D

I find the situation to be pretty fascinating.

Btw Vice - producer of the feature - is fun pop culture sensationalism. ;)

I think it's also because that song was used in a lot of pop culture events, such as gaming conventions. And then people would ask "what song is this".

Maybe there's a difference in how popular this track was in Europe vs. North America. You'd hear this track constantly on the radio in the Netherlands back in the day, an era when "EDM" wasn't a thing yet in the rest of the world.
