What format would you give to a short passage of music to express a thought, feeling, rhythm or idea succinctly?

Good question!

I'm going with pure sound design phrases though. Either my own or somerthing from the Lifeforms days of FSOL.

I was thinking of a limit of 2 bars with a leading beat in if needed, and a held note / chord after the second bar if needed.

And maybe some limitation on what happens in between.

There are infinite formats a person can think of. Maybe there's an exercise in Composing Music, a New Approach from William Russo that might suffice.
