Despite Google "tailoring" ads for me here, I get an amusing collection of weird ads served up to me on ReasonTalk. Like this one:

(Of course what this device is probably actually doing is sending your retina scan to Russian hackers/the CIA/NSA/etc.)

Sometimes you gotta remember that the solution may be worse than the original problem.

If it was not (painfully) obvious, I'm afraid that "ad" is bogus and a product of Jon Heal Deluxe Public Relations®.

Google is strange.

On my desktop I use Firefox and I never log-in to Google if I can help it.

Last week however I got an el-cheapo android phone. I set it all up and it uses Chrome for the web, last night I opened Chrome and some of the search terms I'd just been using on my desktop appeared on my phone.

I'd just been talking with Marco on the IR thread and he mentioned a thing called a 'Palmer Speaker Simulator' which I'd never heard of so I Googled it to find out more, and to my suprise this was one of the 'recent' search terms that appeared in Chrome on my 'phone.

WTF! I'm not logged in to Google or anything else when I'm here yet Chrome on my phone is picking up the searches I make on an unrelated browser and completely different machine, with no linked mail accounts.

Anyone know how?

Aha, I found a single link between the two devices.

I subscribe to a streaming radio service and downloaded the app for it via the Play store and linked it to my subscription using Google to log-in. A single link and they are able to relate any and all my activity on both devices.

Man, what are privacy policies even for these days?

That reminds me, I must get a tube of that PreparationH today...

Sorry for the sore bum. :(

There are privacy settings at Google to direct them not to track you. They are buried, of course — and who knows if they really work — but here are some helpful links for you:

Wow!! talk about sly!
I deleted and paused my youtube history about 5 years ago and thought nothing more of it.
Just checked and they had all my youtube searches logged for about the last 2 years day by day!!
It was probably one of those we are changing some shit don't worry about it emails you get and they just restarted logging my activity.
Scary shit to think of the amount of info about someone they have and they don't make it easy for the general bod in the street to go find it.
Thanks for those links.
DuckDuckGo and Firefox for me from now on.

THEY likely know more about me than I do.
Who cares? What? - clearing your history will help? The data is likely clouded already anyways. Anything for free comes with a cost. Even changing your settings gives yet more info about you. You're worried about targeted ads? In the end, you control your wallet. Right?
