I've always though that Zevon's stuff was well done on a technical level but it only just hit me just how well this song is mixed. It doesn't hurt that it's a simple recording, of course, but still...

Most stuff from that era was well mixed because it had to work on AM radio. Also a big factor was that songs (and music in general) had to have a clear story or image. These days mixes are commonly more about making a big bass, chewed up wubby noise or something similar. Sadly the song or human feeling is incidental (or irrelevant).
