They really got that "bad karaoke video" vibe down accurately. Good job.
What have you been listening to?

I’ve been listening to a country radio station at work and came across this recent gem.

Loving these guys, total krautrock jam heaven
Is "krautrock" a racist term? My understanding is that racism involves a power differential, according to which a dominant individual or class acts upon a subordinate individual or class. It doesn't apply the other way
This is why nobody has a problem with terms like "Yanks", "Limeys", "Kiwis" etc. They're slang terms used to identify ethnic groups, and they can be used in a derogatory manner, but they're not generally held to be racist because the objects of the terms are not subordinate or oppressed groups. I'd argue that the same applies to Germans. You could argue that "krautrock" is crass or rude, but imo it's a stretch to call it racist

ouch, sorry!! wasn't meaning to say something controversial there. I actually agree with what you're saying, mostly.dvdrtldg wrote: ↑30 Mar 2022Is "krautrock" a racist term? It's worth remembering though that the phrase krautrock was initially used by 70s English music journalists as a term of comtempt. Kraut was, you know, one of the words British soldiers used in WWII for the Germans - I think as a shortening for sauerkraut? though that might not be right - the same way the American soldiers in the Vietnam War talked about gooks. The German musicians hated it which is why Faust did a song called Krautrock as a piss take. It's true though that over time its lost that meaning and now its not loaded in the same way.
Maybe I should have said xenophobic instead which might have been a more accurate term.
Btw I'm a New Zealander and I fucking hate being called a Kiwi, so that.
I've resisted Spotify for years but now I'm finally a fan. Maybe it's a good thing because now there's sooo much content. I was listening to 80's rock and metal at work today and I was almost back being 15 and watching Monsters of Rock on Sky Channel with Motley Crue, Motorhead, Slayer, Anthrax, Judas Priest, W.A.S.P. and all that other goodness. Absolutely love it.

All fine, I didn't mean to sound like I was taking offense - I just think the whole thing about what constitutes racism and what doesn't is really interesting. I'm Australian and it's always struck me how the abbreviation of "Australian" into "Aussie" is fine, while the abbreviation of "Japanese" into "Jap" isn't (but then "Japrock" gets a mention in the music press every now & then). All very weirdrorystorm wrote: ↑31 Mar 2022ouch, sorry!! wasn't meaning to say something controversial there.
