I saw this recently and he has some good content. I was torn between joining his site vs Curtiss King from the previous thread. I went with Curtiss King and saw they collaborated on some content. Needless to say I'll be experimenting with soft-clipping the drums in my next project. I think that was the most intriguing point I took from this.

You don't already soft clip your drums? You should, if you want to mix for loudness.
If you use the mclass maximiser, make sure the signal is hot enough though. I think it should be at least about -9db or above on the maximiser meter for it to start soft clipping.

Thanks. I'm gonna try that D16 Frontier freebie. I think I've had some decent drum mixes already but it seems this will take them further.PhillipOrdonez wrote: ↑24 Aug 2019Haven't watched.... But:

I saw this recently and assumed it wasn't worth watching. BTW, there are other ways besides soft clipping (parallel saturation and/or compression, limiting, upwards compression, etc) to get drums nice and loud!PhillipOrdonez wrote: ↑24 Aug 2019Haven't watched.... BTW,
The video is a commercial for promoting his courses. As long as you keep that in mind, a perspective not perfectly aligned with your own is a good thing; a small challenge to your core belief system. Youtube kept telling me I should watch his video. Fine. I did. Fun facts were fun, so I am sharing it here. Could be 110% BS for sure.
Rules are meant to be broken. In Art that is.

Well he is obviously trying to attract inexperienced users. Extracting chord progressions from songs with Melodyne was another point I wasn't aware of but his other points were kind of weak. It's like yeah no shit the "pro's" are using expensive microphones. Some kids on Reddit criticized him for having a sound that isn't even relevant today like an early 00's vibe. It's funny how so many people in house and techno try to emulate the 90's though. I think the modern trap wave that goody two shoe kids are making in their mama's house house is monotonous garbage and has no real feeling to it. Busyworks seems to be one of the better dudes playing the YouTube game although his content is indeed fairly basic.

The problem with all of this is that it's a bunch of talk w/o any examples. In other words, he's trying to sell you on HIM and not on anything that is actually will make you better. And again, I'll bet 10 bucks he sounds just like the other guy we're talking about.
At least he's not annoying to listen to

Oh absolutely! You know much better than me. I do love me some soft clipping followed by a touch of saturation in addition to other stuff on individual and drum busses. I do keep an instance or two of colouring eq in there as wellselig wrote: ↑24 Aug 2019I saw this recently and assumed it wasn't worth watching. He has more focused content on his channel. I found this helpful to me because I have a problem with sustaining my notes which doesn't allow the mix to breathe.reggie1979 wrote: ↑24 Aug 2019The problem with all of this is that it's a bunch of talk w/o any examples. At least he admitted it's "so simple"
He seems like a cool dude, but it's all too remedial for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some musical genius, I just think this is why everything sounds the same,
It's like suburban houses, you can put different paint on them but in the end they are one big cookie cutter. I love a lot of hip hop elements but that isn't what I'm after.

I've been making four on the floor electronic music for most of my time here in the rabbit hole so I'm in the process of refreshing my outlook on music. I stumbled back into hip hop because somebody paid me to produce music for them this summer and they said I should be more proactive. I find it interesting how some aspects of different music are translated within the process. For example, these guys clipping their drums are essentially what I was going for with more advanced saturation techniques in techno. Sometimes it is necessary to dumb things down and start from scratch in order to fly the spaceship so to speak.reggie1979 wrote: ↑24 Aug 2019At least he admitted it's "so simple"

I like 4 on the floor, I don't like rap but I like a ton of hip hop techniques (yes, even the curmudgeon uses 808 sounds )
But these youtubers......good god. They really are convinced that they are so special when in fact they just sound like everyone else.
Now, excuse me while I go make some of my own lame-ass beats!

I recently saw a video of a FL Studio user titled "How To Make Melodies Like A God" and he was basically just chopping up a loop. There are a lot of them who think they are special when they are not.reggie1979 wrote: ↑24 Aug 2019But these youtubers......good god. I feel like I can make melodies like a God when I use CV tuned randomization.

I hope you guys know you're supposed to dilute the apple cider vinegar before drinking it.
The important factors in this kind of music are rhythm and leaving space for vocals. Many producers have a hard time with doing too much believe it or not.

This is such a display of the dumbing down of music. Fitting vocals into a mix is about judicious use of compression, limiting and EQ. You can fit vocals into a busy mix of rhythm parts and instrumentation if you actually know how to write music and rhythm parts which complement the vocal lines rather than distracting them and are prepared to invest hours and hours in getting the EQ exactly right so the vocal fits into the mix perfectly. These people making "beats" simply have no idea what is involved in producing anything more complex.reasonsuser88 wrote: ↑25 Aug 2019I hope you guys know you're supposed to dilute the apple cider vinegar before drinking it.

Fitting vocals into a mix isn't the objective of a beatmaker and they usually don't even have vocals to work with out of the gate anyways. The beatmaker's job is to create a rhythmic vibe for an unknown lyricist and without any idea of what they are capable of. Somebody might be inspired by a complicated instrumental but simplicity will attract way more artists.mashers wrote: ↑26 Aug 2019This is such a display of the dumbing down of music. That said, the lyrics should be the primary focus of the music. The artists are putting themselves on display and it doesn't make sense for people to be distracted by an instrumental. Minimalism doesn't mean an instrumental is of low production quality and the mind can only focus on a few things at once. Maybe you think somebody's focus should switch around to different instrumental parts but then you're not really hooking a listener. One of your objectives in this field should be to hook a listener on the street like a drug and not impress a beard-scratching hipster on a music forum.
Remixing is a good way to have different and perhaps more complicated interpretations of a song.

Reminds me of that Australian guy who wrote a mixing book. I bought it. Was awesome he communicates with his readers who buy his book but he was playing endless reindeer games to coach you into telling him what makes a hit song and if you get it right he’ll say “yes, that’s it” but can’t outright tell you because the Illuminati music department will kill him or something. I gave up after we talked a few times. Always someone running a gimmick.
