Re: Taking time away from Reason ...

Just started recording a band last week after years of making solo electronic stuff. Before this, I only recorded the occasional vocalist here or there over my own productions. This rock project immediately snapped me into big-picture thinking. A room full of guys aren’t going to wait while I tediou...

Re: What do you think of the Soundcloud followers...

Yeah, I’ve resigned myself to the fact that SoundCloud is really just a portfolio for me. It’s a decent place to send people a link to your music, and it can work to find other musicians with whom to collaborate. But it’s not a place where many non-musicians go to discover new music. Bots and repost...

Re: Do we really have to login into RS every time we launch Reason?

I seem to remember someone from RS saying they’re looking into temporary authorizations that would only require logging in once a month. Did I dream that?

Re: Reason 12 saving project - terribly slow when compared to all earlier versions.

I’ve noticed this when I use some custom NNXT patches with many samples loaded. Loading or saving the patch, or loading or saving the project takes easily 30 seconds. I’ve had to make compromises on the sound palette, unfortunately.

The guy’s probably made more money in music than I have. I’ll give it a shot. I want to compose music for a living. I’d take any insights I can get.

Re: Algoritm LFO Delay - blinded

I'm afraid so. The LFO section appears to be very similar to the ones in Europa and Grain, and they also do not have readouts for the LFO delay. I just tried putting them in a Combinator to see if the delay was defined in milliseconds internally, but no; only percentages. Funny, I don't even get th...

Re: Is it possible to map single keys on my keyboard to mute/solo tracks in the Drum Sequencer?

I think the “Key” source in the Combinator creates a modulation based on note pitch, essentially a +/- range with zero being the middle of the keyboard. I don’t think this really would work to send the gate signal to the mute or solo buttons. What you could do is use a few Thor devices with their fr...

Re: Gain staging in Reason question

Great answers here. I would only add that applying distortion will change perceived loudness even if the peak levels in/out remain constant. If a transient snare sample that peaks at -12dB is saturated and the output is calibrated to -12dB, the result will sound louder because distortion generally r...

Re: What Do You Miss From Reason?

I miss the CV cabling to send control signals and note data back and forth across multiple device chains. No simple way to execute that in most DAWs.

Re: New innovative features?

I’d like to see a smart synth that can analyze a sample the user drops in and patch itself into a complex approximation of the original sound. If you drop a guitar pluck sample, it detects the balance between harmonic and stochastic elements and allots a number of oscillators and envelopes to replic...

Re: no metering components?

If the Combinator Editor could have a tap module that could “see” an audio or CV output from any device, that would be great. We already send cables to the Combinator, these new ones would just be invisible.

On that note, let's just make combinators lockable and just pass those off as new synths!
This! We could all enter the RE market this way.

Re: No Auto Save Feature? Lost 4 hours of my life! PISSED OFF!!!

I’d appreciate an auto-save feature added to Reason. Could be optional for those who would dislike it. Logic implements it pretty well. Program crashes for whatever reason, reopen it and your project is intact, whether you had been working 4 hours or 4 minutes. The nature of OP’s work habits is irre...

Re: Is your online behavior and the way you interact with other people different to your behavior in real life?

I wish I could behave the same way in both settings, but I think it’s largely impossible. To start, I don’t generally enter rooms uninvited and announce my opinion to whatever strangers are around. Then, all of the body language, intonation and facial expressions I would normally have at my disposal...

Re: Do you have any fun or exciting ideas for the new Combinator?

I plan on making some generative patches that make use of the added CV inputs on the back. I’ve fallen down the procedural ambient rabbit-hole and I think this update will be perfect. Sound-shaping on the front panel, note control on the back panel.

Re: Mimic: New Creative Sampler

Mimic wasn't intended to be a total superset of NNXT functionality. So sure. There are things NNXT does that Mimic can't. They serve different needs. Yes, that is evident. When RS announced a new sampler was coming in R12, I thought they meant a new flagship device that would build on the feature-s...

Yes. NNXT has been around for 19 years, yet it still does a lot of things that Mimic can’t.

Re: Mimic: New Creative Sampler

I don’t mind the “Quik’nFun” philosophy of Mimic. There’s clearly a user-base to whom that appeals. I just wish there was also a “we’ve updated your old favorites with the features you’ve been requesting” philosophy to go along with it. I like Reason and use it every day, but I do think it used to b...

I’m interested in the stretch algorithms and auto-slicing, but I just wish they had put them into an “NN-XTRA” or something, able to load NN-XT, NN-19 and Rex patches. Add Europa’s Modifier and Harmonic section per voice. Throw in tempo lock and we’d be cooking with gas!

Re: Oscillator semitones

A two-semitone interval can be heard in the rhythmic synth pulse that plays throughout the score for The Dark Knight. It really works well to build tension. You can hear it in the beginning of “I’m Not a Hero.”
