Re: Analysing Sounds for House

Banging tune, a true classic! So your question was about how to classify types of sounds, I take it? I would say it's pretty subjective, more an art than a science really. The Korg M1 Universe patch is more or less what I'd call a "pad", and if I needed to describe it in more detail than...

Re: Why no delay compensation in a combi

Haven't checked this, but off the top of my head: for an instrument combi, would it be possible to get the delay compensation by loading it into the insert slot and simply routing it to the mix channel input, as an instrument, rather than using the to and from jacks? I'm guessing that's not enough t...

Re: Introducing - AIRE Instruments

I've had fantastic results using Embertone's solo strings (for Kontakt) for expressive leads. They sound great and are very versatile! I've used them in paid work on several projects now, and clients have all been very pleased with the results. I've used them for emotive melody parts, layering with...

Re: Analysing Sounds for House

Agreed with the above, and I'd also point out that "sounds in house music" is way too vague and general. As you can see from my username, I speak with authority on this! ;) Seriously though, there's been so much breadth and variety in house music over the past 35 years that your question is almost i...

Re: Introducing - AIRE Instruments

SWAM is partly sample-based though, right? I certainly haven't heard any 100% modeled (i.e., zero use of samples) acoustic instruments that sounded remotely convincing to me, whereas SWAM and some others that do use samples can absolutely get to a level of realism that will fool most listeners when ...

Re: New stock devices using repatch extensions and icons.

Yep, I'd really love to see something like that brought into the new browser. Seriously, I get the appeal of being able to seamlessly browse and load any instrument or effect patch, and I'm certainly not suggesting that that functionality should be removed, but there really are times when it's neces...

Re: New stock devices using repatch extensions and icons.

Actually, it's even worse than I thought--put a bunch of .repatch files in a folder and there's STILL no way to restrict Reason's browser to show only the ones for the particular RE that has browse focus! Ugh, what a mess. Would love to know how you got the behavior you're describing, EnochLight.

Re: Reason 10 - Why no reviews?

You'll be pleased to read that the March edition of Computer Music magazine (CM250) has a review of Reason 10. You won't be so pleased once you have read the review and seen the mark out of 10. Grum. I don't have the magazine and the review doesn't seem to be online... what's the mark out of 10 and...

Re: New stock devices using repatch extensions and icons.

What I DO care about is that Reason's browser is device agnostic, and like it was mentioned earlier - I don't care what device is loaded if I'm looking for an awesome bass patch, or arp, or whatever. And if I'm browsing via a particular device with it in focus, I can only see/open patches that are ...

Re: Guys I made a booboo with new iMac purchase

Another thing that no one has pointed out is that large sample-based instruments eat up tons of RAM. So if you're mainly making synth-based music, you may get by fine with 8 GB, but if you plan on using lots of high-quality sample libraries (e.g. virtual instruments for Kontakt or anything like that...

Re: Any performance degradation in Reason on pre-Haswell Windows machines with new MS patch?

If I'm not mistaken, it seems the anecdotal reports also include most users on ASIO audio drivers, which may be something to take into consideration. My worry is that I also use my pre-Haswell-era Windows 10 box as my Plex server as well, and video transcoding is all done on the CPU. :( But if my R...

Re: audio to midi

Disappointing maybe, but certainly not strange. Algorithmically analyzing polyphonic audio and teasing out the pitches in it is no easy task! Just ask Celemony, they certainly charge accordingly... ;) (Psst... you do realize that, in this case, it's "mono" as in the opposite of "poly" i.e. one note ...

Re: Any performance degradation in Reason on pre-Haswell Windows machines with new MS patch?

Wait, what?! Ravisoni is on a post-Haswell chip on Windows 10 (Broadwell). If you're on Windows 10 and a Haswell or older , then you most certainly may notice the double-digit performance hit - according to everything I'm reading anyway. Judging by the anecdotal reports earlier in this thread and e...

Re: Nasty VST undo bug (host crash)

Good to know it's this widespread, that should mean PH will have no trouble reproducing and fixing it.

For further info: I'm getting this behavior on a Windows 8.1 machine as well, so it looks like Win7 is the only OS that's immune.

Nasty VST undo bug (host crash)

I've stumbled upon a catastrophic bug that totally crashes Reason when undoing the creation of a VST rack unit under certain circumstances. This is in the latest version of Reason (10.0.2), on Windows. Steps to reproduce: - Create a VST rack unit. Every single VST seems to be affected (instruments, ...

Great, thanks! I figured the things to watch out for would mainly be CPU/mainboard replacements, HDD/SSD, and major OS upgrades or reinstalls.
