Re: Parallel Compression – what’s really going on?
In the 6:2 mixer you have soloed channel 1, so channel 2 is muted ... maybe that's the problem? When channel 2 is muted it shouldn't change the sound when something is plugged into that muted channel right? If it's the old Spider bug, what is going on is a one frame delay in one channel. The way to...

Re: Master stems used for live performances?
Thanks all for replying. Did some further thinking. Mastering doesn't really do much for a live set now does it? You don't need any more loudness with a massive sound system. Massive sound systems don't usually go for audiophile-level definition either. I believe it was Normen, who works in live/th...

Re: Master stems used for live performances?
Thanks for replying. I have done "live" sets using finished tracks back when I played trance, but I have found this to be rather uninspiring, unimpressive for audiences, the output is always the same. Now I play : I play latin music: moombahton, cumbia, slowed down house music, that sort of thing. ...

Re: Selig Deesser mono or stereo
But this advantage comes at a cost: it's mono! The reason is that since it's based on sibilance detection rather than a signal exceeding a threshold, that means according to the device there is either sibilance or there is not - with a stereo source, especially one that consists of multiple voices,...

Re: Parallel Compression – what’s really going on?
You can't get upwards compression from a downwards compressor IMO, the two work (and sound) totally different. With downwards compression and makeup gain, you are still yanking down the peaks, while upwards compression leaves the peaks alone and thus will sound completely different in most cases. Y...

Re: Teaching Reason
Do you have Keynote (mac)? I just found an outline I created that's pretty detailed, focusing on music tech basics. You would have to apply the general concepts to Reason specifically, but it would be a great starting point if you've never approached this subject before.

Re: C'MON PROPS!!! I want to bring down the level of all tracks at once like this.
It makes your mixer look so untidy if you start bussing everything [...] Really? I route busses into busses into busses to organize my tracks. I would do this in Reason if you could then hide the individual tracks and just work with the sub-mixes (do this all the time in Pro Tools when mixing). :)

Re: I would like it if the panel with the instruments and effects and players would remember where it was last scrolled
When you have a lot of rack extensions it becomes a pain in the butt to always have to scroll down the entire selection of rack extensions to get to the items you want. It would be nice if it would remember where it was scrolled to last time you accessed it. Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk Agree...

Re: C'MON PROPS!!! I want to bring down the level of all tracks at once like this.
I never missed this. I use a bus instead. I use busses for this too, but the question remains: what if one of the channels you want to include in the group is already a part of a bus? Can't be done! The "shift/select" solution is simple, elegant, and addresses a common issue in a way that is obviou...

Re: Parallel Compression – what’s really going on?
Great article and video Giles! I never thought about parallel compression as a way to affect the ratio. I've always used it as a way achieve upward compression and/or preserve transients (and not to mention creative effects, but that's not what this article is about). The scenario you tested had bo...

Re: Issues with/alternatives to BV512 EQ for multiband processing
Depending on what you're doing that would basically duplicate the entire signal causing a phasing issue since the whole signal is duplicated with no offsets since it's the same signal duplicated again by any splitters or something. I usually stick to the splineEq or mclass. Although...Keeping...

Re: Issues with/alternatives to BV512 EQ for multiband processing
Hi all- I've thrown together a combi using a few BV512s in 16-band EQ mode to split a signal into four bands for some basic multiband processing. But today I noticed some pretty high frequencies still making it through the "low-pass" EQ, and I'm trying to figure out why, so I can work on some alter...

Re: Selig Deesser mono or stereo
Hi guys! Just a quick question. Just got the Deesser from Selig Audio and using it on pure mono recordings is fine, but as soon as i want to use it on a acapellas or vocal tracks in stereo it gets a wierd mono fx with also less richness in the low frequencie area. Am i missing something here, is it...

Re: How To Know What Bass Notes to Use
Hi All! I have a unusual chord progression going in Reason. It's actually (I forget the actual root note now as I've shut Reason down) but it was m7/11 chord (3 chords which I transposed from the initial chord to make 3), kind of a deep house chord progression. Anyway, not just for this chord progr...

Re: What is your go-to vocal reverb(s)?
I use two approaches to vocal reverb. One, based on the Lexicon family, is the thicker approach when you need to fill space. I use the RV-7000 Hall (room 4) as a starting point, often using a larger size than the default. The other, based on a more transparent approach like TC Electronics for when y...

Re: Master stems used for live performances?
Not sure I understand the question - but here's a question for you: how are you using stems live? Why not just play the finished track, or create a 'minus' track for performance (with one track missing and you play that track live)? It would sound like you want and also be a simpler setup, if it wou...

Re: Drum reinforcement: Audio to MIDI -- are these tracks lined up right?
I wish Reason had a "convert audio clips to MIDI" feature - then you could use "Split at Slices" in Slice Edit mode to create a clip/note for each hit.

Re: Drum reinforcement: Audio to MIDI -- are these tracks lined up right?
Possibly! I've never tried it on drums - how does it sound to you? How easy is it to get clean triggers? Audio to MIDI is a general purpose process, as I understand it. It's primary application is taking mono melodic tracks and converting to MIDI. In these applications, transients and timing are no...

Re: Drum reinforcement: Audio to MIDI -- are these tracks lined up right?
If you are talking about absolute drum replacement, where the originals are not heard at all, then a delay of 1ms or less (and some slight variation/jitter over time) is probably OK for most folks in most situations. If OTOH you're talking about drum supplement, where you need to hear a little of b...

I've been doing the favorites approach for years now - it's not perfect but it beats not having any option for this functionality.

Just watched the season finale for Better Call Saul. Not that interesting. Orange is the new black sucks, really bad season this time. Started to watch Glow yesterday, and it looks promising. I'm giving Glow a bit of a pass because Marc Maron. Slow at parts, but as you say it looks promising. Sent ...
