Re: Mimic: New Creative Sampler
Don't worry, you are not being negative, you are exactly correct. 20 years ago, Reason had a strong design vision for its devices. They all did something very well (for the time) and had a clear use in the rack. But the last 10 years they have been adding more and more mediocre devices, and not upgr...

Re: Is anyone still working at the 44.1khz sample rate?
Hey Kbrad, you are right that jlgrimes was technically incorrect but they were talking casually, and in a general sense they are in the right ballpark; running at a higher sample rate and oversampling both reduce aliasing for nonlinear processing of the same input signal. You are also correct that s...

Re: "Combinators" of the VST world
Thanks! You really came through! How come I have not heard of this plugin before? It's been available for 8 years!? Basically, this is a Combinator, with 32 Macros, that can load VSTs, and do all kinds of parallel processing and mixing. Even has a couple of crossfader modules (very useful. I always ...

Re: "Combinators" of the VST world
Yes, those features are great, but I want something that I can save patches and be able to load them into any DAW as a plugin. (Like we should have been able to do with the RRP!) Which DAW do you use? Many of them have an equivalent to the combinator. Examples: Studio One has Multi-Instruments and M...

"Combinators" of the VST world
Does anyone have experience with VST "combinators" such as Kushview Element or Plugin Boutique Unify ? https://kushview.net/element/ https://www.pluginguru.com/products/unify-standard/ EDIT: or how about VCV rack or Cherry modular using a "VST host" module? https://vcvrack.com/Host https://store.che...

Re: Most overrated and underrated VST developers (can list specific VSTs too)
ok, I should not have made such a careless and oversimplified statement about EQ. I call out other people for stuff like that, and you are right to do it to me! To clarify: There are some differences between EQs. However, almost all properly-designed EQ plugins and even DAW EQs can null perfectly at...

Re: Most overrated and underrated VST developers (can list specific VSTs too)
I consider Waves Malware, ever since my laptop was bundled with a shitty Waves "enhancer" (with maxxbass, of course) as the default multimedia sound wrapper in a way that could not be easily removed. At least I could turn it off, but it's always sitting there in my system tray, like a goblin. :P But...

Re: Most overrated and underrated VST developers (can list specific VSTs too)
TB Equalizer 4: I just demo'd it, and you know what, it's great . For the price, it is a steal. Thanks for the recommendation! However, it only has full dynamic functionality in VST3, so if you need a dynamic EQ, sadly you can't use this one in Reason. I think Pro-Q still has the edge with its more ...

Re: Most overrated and underrated VST developers (can list specific VSTs too)
Workflow, workflow, workflow. It's nothing to do with having a "premium" brand name, it's the simple fact that Fabfilter's fast hands-on UI, accurate and easy-to-read visualizations, customizability, and overall workflow, can save you a couple of seconds/minutes here and there, every time you use it...

Re: Most overrated and underrated VST developers (can list specific VSTs too)
Some crazy talk going on here! of course subjectivity is important, but let's keep it on planet Earth. Fabfilter & Izotope are both top-tier, they make tools for professionals. They have clear, workflow-based UIs which are not "eye candy", they are designed to save you time which is really important...

Re: Proper stereo panning in Reason: RE or VST?
Yeah I'm with you on the pan law. If the line mixer had smoother volume steps instead of only 127 values, I could adjust it with another workaround to gradually reduce/increase the gain while panning. But I think at the current resolution it might be too steppy (especially when automating).. maybe I...

Quick reminder my free "Pandemon" combinator will do real stereo panning and a few other tricks, without needing any non-standard devices.

Re: Proper stereo panning in Reason: RE or VST?
Yes, you got it. Stereo panning should move the R channel gradually across the the left side, not fade it out. That's what "panning" is. Fading the L and R channels on a stereo signal is not panning, it is a "balance" control, which (as I recall) was originally a way of adjusting the listening posit...

Re: Proper stereo panning in Reason: RE or VST?
Selig explained the details very well as usual. The tl;dr version is that the Reason mixer "pan/width" control is totally broken, it is NOT REAL PANNING, and does not work correctly on anything except mono signals. The workaround is to pan in the rack with my free combinator or Selig Gain. If you wa...

Re: Pultec Bass Trick
ok I made a freebie Combinator which does the "pultec" style low shelf thing, with a variable frequency, plus a tilt EQ. It's really basic, for simple and fast shaping with a bit of character. The parameters are quite carefully selected to save time and be useful in the rack without thinking too muc...

Re: Most overrated and underrated VST developers (can list specific VSTs too)
Most over-rated: Trash2 and Fabfilter Saturn (yes, fight me) ...why? - They sound absolutely fine but the saturation market is (pun intended) so there are much cheaper options available. Also their interfaces don't live up to the more recent interfaces from the same companies. Izotope and Fabfilter...

Re: Widening Plugins
On mixes generally, most stereo enhancer effects are terrible and can hurt a mix. Except for Izotope's weirdly magical one (use it carefully though). It sounds like what you want is space and dimension from a mono vocal source? There are ways to do that. (In general, keep it subtle, and check your m...

Re: Is anyone still working at the 44.1khz sample rate?
I agree with the "do whatever makes you happy" part, but I don't understand why people don't just spend a few minutes to watch that damn primer video (and the fabfilter one) and learn exactly what is going on. This is not about belief. It's math & physics. As several ppl including me have explained ...

Re: Is anyone still working at the 44.1khz sample rate?
Again, this is a very common misunderstanding, but it is a misunderstanding of sampling theory. Watch that video, seriously! As I said earlier, as long as the sample rate meets the minimum requirements, a wave will be reconstructed perfectly . This is because there is one, and only one, mathematical...

Re: Is anyone still working at the 44.1khz sample rate?
That graph Billy shared, showing the "difference" between lower and higher sample rates, clearly demonstrates* that the lower sample rate will perfectly reproduce the sine wave as shown. And obviously, you cannot get better than perfect. If you're not sure why, then you need an introduction to the f...

Re: Is anyone still working at the 44.1khz sample rate?
A 16-bit recording has a dynamic range of 96db. (Good Home systems) A 24-bit recording has a dynamic range of 144db. (Good Live systems) Those dynamic ranges for 16 and 24 bits are correct; but no live system in the world has a dynamic range anywhere close to 144dB!!! Lets start with the fact that ...

Re: Is anyone still working at the 44.1khz sample rate?
Not this old chestnut again. Let's get one thing clear from the start: your ears cannot hear frequencies beyond the limits of a 44.1kHz recording. No, they really can't. And no playback environment on earth, no matter how expensive, can reproduce the full dynamic range of a 24-bit recording. So 48kH...

Re: FREE from Chaos FX: Pandemon Stereo Panner
Bump, because this is a FREE and really useful little combinator. Stick it in front of delays. Try the autopan feature. Use it as a general 2-band stereo width and pan utility. Control your panning in the rack BEFORE hitting other effects. Automate the pan and width to bring movement and life to pad...
