Re: Good Speaker Monitoring for Mix and Mastering or Sound designing

I don't have particularly strong opinions about any speaker brand except KRK. I know they have their fans but I've never heard a good KRK speaker. To me they always sound more like HiFi speakers than monitoring speakers. Agree except for one standout, still one of my all time favorites to mix on, t...

Re: Producing through "mastering" chain?

I was very prone to trying to make a great sound first, and I didn't depart from that until about 10 years in when I collaborated with a producer named Kat who always starts out tracking with the most basic midi-like sounds. The problem with that approach is that you will polish every turd, and bec...

Re: Good Speaker Monitoring for Mix and Mastering or Sound designing

Producer and engineer here. Mostly EDM and some trap I can say that I’ve tested many speakers, but my favorites are Tannoy, JBL and Genelec. Tannoy and Genelec I would say are more accurate and flat but yet still sound great and open. Tannoy and JBL are total steals for their price range. Genelec i...

Re: Producing through "mastering" chain?

Producer and engineer here. First of all, mastering is something you do AFTER you produce and mix. Why would you even need any master fx when you're producing? I mean I'm always a believer there is no hard rules but in this case it doesn't make sense. The point is, you want to produce and mix a son...

Re: Good Speaker Monitoring for Mix and Mastering or Sound designing

If I can hear the entire spectrum, my system will reproduce the entire spectrum. Seems logical to me. But I see problems like this before I hear them, because in order to properly perceive the low frequencies you have to listen very loudly… Not following - if your system doesn’t reproduce 40 Hz how...

Re: oscilloscope RE's?

Not sure what you're asking for here, as an oscilloscope is designed to see each cycle of a waveform. If you want to see the audio drawn on screen in real time and be able to view it at just about any resolution, use an audio track. I'm constantly finding it useful to record audio to a track just t...

Re: Solutions for a small hardware synth collection

I have ordered a few things from this small husband/wife company and been very happy. They are 3D printed and good quality, and have reasonable prices and a wide range of options for all the ‘little toys’ in a typical setup these days:

Re: Can MIDI Velocity Control a VST parameter live?

I would think that velocity is mapped internally, no? But even so, this type of control really needs to be “performed” IMO since it affects the sustain and not just the attack. I use it to create swells and decrescendos and all the “inter note” movement real players do naturally. Meaning you are not...

Re: Default browser button folder option?

I too have given up on figuring this out, and now have a quick key for Reset Device and shortcuts in the Browser for all the places I need to go quickly on the regular. I guess what is needed is a separate browser memory for each device, but there may be issues with that approach…

Re: Producing through "mastering" chain?

One final note - there is a difference IMO between mastering a single and mastering an album. If you’re making an album, you may want to master it as a whole. This allows you to create one “experience” from top to bottom, and may require a different approach on some songs than if just mastering in i...

Re: Rant: What is up with the Apple Vision Pro poor cable management?

It's for the power pack and yes it does look ridiculous. Nintendo called and they want their Virtual Boy back... I used to be a huge VR nerd in the early 90s when the tech was first being explored. Seemed like a super cool idea. I've since matured quite a bit and can't really see it taking the worl...

Re: Producing through "mastering" chain?

If your mastering chain is already doing so much that it’s changing the mix, then change the settings so it’s not! If your mixes ‘require’ that much mastering that it’s changing the mix, also a good time to change the settings. If you are mixing ITB and your mix is far enough off target you need mas...

Re: Tape Delays?

I like The Echo, I find it a great utility delay that can be configured for many types of effects. But for more realistic tape loop effects I like the two UA offerings. I also like the wobble from Arturia’s Mello-Fi and put it in front of other delays (or just on it’s own).

The best you can do is encourage someone to TRY Reason.
As everyone is different, Reason is not the best music creation software for EVERYONE (even if it IS the best for me).

I'm not talking about opinions. Yea, you are. You can’t just price the raw components without factoring in the whole experience. You are basically sayin you are right and I am wrong. I say Macs are not overpriced. That is MY opinion. It is based on years of experience. One cannot know my mind, my n...

Re: Reason vs. Logic

Are we talking about opinions? Becuase I believe we are, and you can’t say someone’s opinion is “right or wrong”, it just “is”. Unless there is a specific dollar value that is priced “correctly” that we can all agree on, one mans “overpriced” is another mans “totally worth it”. In my case, I ‘ think...

note for next time selig, i think your mic is too quiet against the track. but cool idea for a stream Yea, I got to figure that out - it’s not that bad until I add the master compressor and mastering limiter, which takes the music up over the voice. So I would have to bring the music down but only ...

Maybe consider getting something that doesn't require gas, like a Grip Car:

Technically I didn't buy it myself, my most awesome partner did (she is a designer and a big fan of TE, even has an original OP1).
So far I'm getting on with it far better than the OP1…been asked to review it for Recording Magazine, so more details to follow!

Re: Subtractor/Maelstrom preset ID

I got some intel. The member doesn't remember the specific patch, but it was from some very common refill that was used back then. He mentioned a lot of Zero-G stuff so it's probably some Zero-G refill? All the ZeroG stuff I'm familiar with is loop based samples ("Total REX", awesome variety, btw)....
