Re: How to choose a good Sound Card

Wait, the ONLY thing you changed was the cable? I thought you were ALSO switching from the line outputs to the headphone outputs, which SHOULD be louder (possibly more distorted too for a few reasons). I changed the cable and plugged it into the headphone input of the sound card(from the speakers)....

Re: How to choose a good Sound Card

Do you mean AUX In? https://www.jbl.com/studio-monitors/JBL-104-BT.html I don't know if that's OK. If you have a split cable try the headphones TRS output on your audio interface, to the Left/Right TS of the JBL. Control the level with the headphones knob. Try that first. I tried that. The sound le...

Re: How to choose a good Sound Card

A big step up from your Presonus Interface would be a Audient Id14 mk2, what I owned and what’s now my brothers Interface. It’s has really nice preamps and Converter quality is on par with my RME FirefaceUC. The driver and virtual mixer is very comfortable to use, really fast latency’s, it comes wi...

Re: How to choose a good Sound Card

I wonder if the issue is that this interface is USB powered, and doesn’t have as much power as other interfaces?
I don’t know if these are the “best” interfaces, but I’ve had good experiences with both the Scarlett and Clarett line of interfaces by Focusrite.

Re: Why are there only two CV inputs and outputs in Complex-1?

Just put it in a Combinator. You'll have CV access to pretty well every parameter. I was thinking the same thing. Preach. I was just thinking there is one big advantage to doing this, which is you get control over stepped controls such as the octave switch on oscillators, which is otherwise impossi...

Re: “Why Modern Digital Synthesis Is More Analog Than Analog” - Mark Barton

I love software, I love hardware, I love analog, I love digital. I use each for different things.
I really do not understand the idea of drawing a line and only choosing from only one side of the line.

Re: How to choose a good Sound Card

I have to wonder if it’s the other way around. The sound card looks fine, it’s the monitors that look more like the weak link here. I make gear decisions based on the weak link, meaning I look at my tools and first make sure I have one of everything I need. If my needs include a mic, an interface, m...

Re: Reason Studios 30th Anniversary Live Stream

Wow, 30 years ago I helped review the release of ReCycle for Electronic Musician, and I got the license (and the job) because I had Sample Cell and a Mac computer and the other writer didn’t. So technically I didn’t purchase it, but I’ve been on the “Prop/RS” train for the entire ride even though I ...

Re: What SPL (decibel) meter to buy?

You don’t need to separately measure SPL to use REW. The test mic, even a cheep one from Behringer is plenty fine in my experience. The test mic will be far more accurate any any phone or hand held SPL meter anyway, so don’t worry about it. I agree any phone app, especially the better ones, will be...

Since this is a forum, it is about sharing opinions and having discussions. I wholeheartedly agree with that. I even may have posted statements to that effect in the past myself :puf_wink: But, mods including yourself AND Giles are often quick to point out that a discussion needs to stay on topic. ...

Re: How Reason's coarse knobs & sliders work?

Reason's knobs and faders move in steps, not tiny increments. A quantization function rounds user input to the nearest available step value. Step size depends on the parameter, wordle unlimited user interaction, and doesn't rely on pre-defined tables. Not unless you specify it in the code. As I've ...

Re: API 560 inspired graphic EQ (free/stock REs)

Here's the SSL version, should all be working good - it is SO much closer to the original... I downloaded your version. You basically use the SSL EQ to implement a static graphic EQ. The Q-factor of all the bands is fixed. I'm not sure which API model you are looking at, but the 560 has this specif...

Re: API 560 inspired graphic EQ (free/stock REs)

This must have been a pretty decent undertaking! So I don't enjoy saying this doesn't quite look/sound right, at least when comparing to my UA version (API Vision). Side note, I always used the 550s for drums, for which they are legend - but the graphic was known for electric guitars in my (Nashvill...

I’ve been around those my entire life and still can’t string one up without looking at instructions. The first mic I ever had with a mount like that is the NT1. I got that in like 2009 so like 15 years ago. I have no excuse. Last night I was using the TF11. I really like the sound of that mic. For ...

Seems pretty limited, I don’t see a way to swap the order of EQ and Compression, for example. I already have excellent API EQ and 1176 compressors and plenty of amazing tape and saturation simulation. Plus I used the hardware versions for many years so I may be more biased to the original tools/appr...

Some hopefully constructive feedback from me: I think your tutorial gives good inspiration on how one can utilise CV and the combinator to get a nice generative sequence going. It's very valuable info for someone who is new to Reason and has not yet taken a deeper dive into the possibilities of it....

Was going to suggest PoohBears chart as well. I see two quick things to add/correct. One is the pre fader send which should be "post pan" as in Pooh's chart. Also note the Direct Outs (not in Pooh's chart) as switching jacks, which should mute the main path when connected. The rest looks right to me...

Re: Hardware Production Question

Just checked, and indeed OctaMed had MIDI support, but I don't know if that went any further than sequencing notes (I never had an Amiga). Around that time (I think) I was running Cubase on an Atari, which was much more capable than Octamed. Octamed was primarily a tracker, while Cubase was a full-...

Re: Vocal-Shaper VST does Dynamic Cleaning

As often as not, I don't want to boost the fundamental of the vocal, unless I'm going for an intimate, moody close-miked sound. Generally (though not always) the fundamental is the strongest harmonic in a timbre, and it doesn't need any help. I agree with vocals, am cutting lows more often than boo...

Re: Hardware Production Question

That depends on if you have a sequencer running for the track (hardware or software) and if the synthesizer in question can be controlled by that sequencer (with either MIDI or CV). Ahh good point. So say back in 1990, could the filter cut off be controlled in say Octamed on an Amiga computer? Sure...

I didn’t find that feature, but when I read stuff like this I think about all the amazing vocal mixes over the past 75+ years that never needed this feature. That said, I’ve explored stuff like this using pitch to MIDI and ColoringEQ to follow the pitch. It may be handy in some cases but seems almos...

The best kind of noise removal is usually done via an offline process where the tool can analyse the whole file to generate a (dynamic) noise profile. This cannot be done just as good in a live process (like in an RE).
Came here to say the same, you can have it quick or high quality, pick one!
