I'd go for the second choice get a X-Touch FaderPort or Icon qcon and then a midi keyboard with no knobs or faders.
because if you get a keyboard controller with faders and knobs that are not motorized or endless encoders you will soon go back to using only the mouse for setting.

I start with a drum kit rooted to 8 channels then combined to a drum bus and a Bass channel
then I add guitar and depends on what I try to make will determine what is in the guitar channel. rarely synth gets added until I feel I have the basic track running

Personally I think basslines are the easiest part of writing.. unless your doing some really busy melodies but even then it's not that hard... Are we at a point where we just push one button and a song is produced?

yes and soon most can't recreate their hits if they get deleted by accident
