Re: Confusion with hardware specs and their performance.

My first thought was that it was the interface causing me trouble. The Focusrite 2i2 (gen 2) I have seems to stutter at times if it isn't set to 96k/1024. I've been eyeing the RME Babyface pro as the upgrade to the 2i2. RME gets a good rep for stable drivers and really low latency speeds. FWIW I re...

Re: Merge MIDI tracks into single track?

In Reason there's no way to have more than one track for the same instrument - how are you having drum kit parts on separate tracks all voiced on the same instrument? Sequence granularity and mixing granularity are different things - separate lanes for kick/snare/hat are different than separate aud...

Re: Merge MIDI tracks into single track?

Curious how you get to the point you want to take notes from different instruments and merge them all into one instrument/sound? Sometimes I'm working with a sequence that has drum kit parts all on separate tracks (even though voiced with the same instrument), whereas I don't really need that level...

Merge MIDI tracks into single track?

Is there a faster way to merge the clips on multiple MIDI tracks into a single track than the method I know: 1. On a target track, create an empty lane for each source track 2. Drag the clips from each track you want to merge onto an empty lane (taking care it maintains time alignment) 3. Invoke the...

Re: Reason Midile format

I have a similar use case in which I export specific tracks from a Reason song to an external player (lights and fx in my case). As Carly notes it is not a clean and direct process since: - All are assigned to Channel 1 (even if coming from an EMI track with an assigned channel!) - Every track produ...

Re: Mapping notes

I'm sure the SDK could handle it and this would definitely make sense as a player (assuming it offered CV in). The things I would like it to do: - Allow me to map notes - Allow me to quantise notes or a CV signal to an arbitrary set of notes. - Allow me to write quantising note data to track Thinki...

Re: Custom Program Names for external MIDI device?

You have a template now so going forward it will be quicker, also a well documented setup helps when looking back on a project.. (and like you it's a great fun learning experience).. I also use a VST called VSTNotepad by CodeFN42, a free VST, great for keeping basic notes. Great tip re the VSTNotep...

Re: Custom Program Names for external MIDI device?

As follow-up to the OP and using PoohBear's techniques, here are a couple of banks I can use for recording dynamic guitar fx patches during a song, such that the recorded MIDI track (exported to an SMF) can be used to automate the guitar fx changes during a live performance, played against an audio ...

Re: Custom Program Names for external MIDI device?

If you only want to record your changing program while pressing Select' buttons, then you should just create a track for Select, hit record and press Select' buttons while you need to. I agree that works if the objective is just to reproduce the program changes when playing the song back from Reaso...

Re: Custom Program Names for external MIDI device?

Ljekio: I don't think that is possible to transfer this info to any external device because it requires a send sysex data. Actually I don't really need to send the text itself to an external device... I was just looking for a way to be able to view text names for patches when programming them for an...

Thanks so much for taking the time to put this explanation together! And I figured the right solution would involve use of a MIDI loopback :)
but what is the TS8450?

Re: Custom Program Names for external MIDI device?

Hi Poohbear... I've been giving this config a test drive (including a simple '1 bank' version with 1 Select and another 'multi-bank' version with multiple Selects together). It indeed works, and I can record the Select events and see it changing the Program values in the EMI as I punch Select button...

Re: Exporting MIDI tracks for External MIDI Instruments

Can you tell me the purpose for this? In this use case, I'm using Reason to build audio backing tracks for live performance, so the main end product is just an audio file (Reason export to .wav, then to aac for performance playback). However, I also 'play' MIDI events synchronized with the backing ...

Exporting MIDI tracks for External MIDI Instruments

My understanding from doc and poking in exported files: when using "Export MIDI File..." Reason will create a MIDI file including: All Reason tracks represented with a MIDI track, whether corresponding to an External MIDI Instrument (EMI) or not All MIDI events transmitted on Channel 1 (binary 0) fo...

Re: Custom Program Names for external MIDI device?

I should add you could cable up the CV select switches together to create a full 128 patch bank... Yes, I was thinking the same. I really only need a couple dozen patches so a smaller set would do the trick. Thanks for the youtube channel link, looks good! (Some of my old MIDI equipment dates back ...

Re: Custom Program Names for external MIDI device?

Add the EMI to a combinator with a CV8x4 and CV select switch... Thanks PoohBear, that's clever and certainly not an approach I would have thought of. I'll give this a try. (Sure seems like something like this should be built-in, but I suppose EMIs are considered to be mostly 'historical' these day...

Lighting controller with MIDI ctrl of scenes and fade speed?

I'm wondering if others in the community have identified a lighting controller or interface box that supports: * DMX output * MIDI input to control at minimum: - Selection of previously programmed scenes - Changes to the fade speed (between programmed scenes from immediate to slower cross-fades) * C...

Custom Program Names for external MIDI device?

Is there a means of creating custom text names for Programs (patches) for an external MIDI device? I add an External MIDI device to Reason to send program changes to that guitar processor a...

Alas, another gone. I enjoyed using Cakewalk in the 90s, including for backing tracks during live play. Back then it seemed utterly amazing coming from DOS-based Textures in the 80s!

How to clear multi-track selection?

Very noob question, but can't find it in the manual, via experimentation, etc: Scenario: * Reason 9.5 on Windows * Multiple tracks in a song * Not in Edit Mode * Right-click on a track header and choose 'Select All' from the edit menu * All tracks get highlighted indicating they are all selected. Close song without exit? (Windows)

For 9.5 on Windows 10: Is there way to close the last open song without completely exiting Reason, e.g., revert to equivalent of 'New' on close? Or a workaround that others use? In some of my work I'm often opening and closing a number of songs and I'd like to avoid having to relaunch the app if I c...

Re: Long Midi Notes - Help please!

I had basically the same question related to tracks recorded with tools like A-List Studio Drummer, and ended up bouncing to audio then muting the original. Kind of clumsy, but glad to know 'that's how you do it'; so thanks for the confirmation.
